View Full Version : gearboxes
it's time i got myself a decent cr box. which one should i go for? not too sure about gearboxes.
i want a 4.18 fd, where will i find one of these? and which box should i put it in? f10cr or f13cr?
i heard that a 1600 clutch will fit to a 1400 flywhell and f10 box, is this right and is it much bigger than a 1400 item?
cheers
ben.
im not sure on the flywheel/clutch combs as ive not delved that far in lol
but for the CR box, id suggest an F13 irem coupled with a 4.18 fd (17 and 71 teeth) if you cant get the bellhousings to match then just keep your current housing and slap the gear cluster and diff into that :) simple
What box have you got now? If its a long ratio box, odds are that it will have a decent FD. If its an F10cr, use that and locate an FD from a wide ratio box. All you gotta do is look round the scrap yards for whats stamped on the end of all the boxes.

I can't find any codes on the end of the boxes! I have looked all over it.
Never found one on my 1.4 and that went through 3 of them!
And I can't find one on my 1.6 F13? box?
I have this but dunno if it's any good....

They are all stamped very lightly. The slightest dirt or corrosion will obscure the numbers.

i was speaking to rob about this before i could not see where the stamp was on my f13!! but if you say it stamped very lightly i will have another look!!
carb cleaner and rag. clean up the section of casing that actually holds the gears
ie not the end plate, but the next part in, at the bottom

just had a look at mine on the GTE! its a cr 3.74
it was very clean just had alot of dirt over it, think i will get a 4.18. where would i source one form?
bruce
Is the ratio like a multiplier so the higher it is the higher the output?
so a GTE with a 3.74 diff will have a lower top speed than a 4.18 diff?
Other way around, 4.18 has lower top speed than 3.74.
And you'll find the 4.18 in a WR box.

mc, my box is a 5speed f10 from a 1.2, dunno what fd it has, probably a 3.9
3.74 or 3.94 one of them. my 1.2 had in it lol

They are in some of the SR boxes, mostly the Mk1 SR's. I got my 4.18 FD from a WR cavalier gearbox.
As has been said, just go around to local scrap dealers. In fact, heres a link to a company that will have the 4.18 on the shelf (provided they haven't run out of stock), and will post it to you.

Give them a call, they should be able to help you out.

cheers jim, i will have take it apart tomorrow and see if its really a 4.18! lol if its not i will look at geting one from there or off a cavi f13.
bruce
If it has a 4.18, it wont be a close ratio, so you need to go find one of those to combine with your FD.

yeh mc i got the gearbox off the GTE that i will be fitting it into!! it has a f13 cr, so thats all good eh? the box that has the 4.18 in is from a sr box
bruce
whats the difference in performance wise between the 4.18fd and all the 3.74fd etc i know its a stupid question but i dont no lol
Its a ratio and applies to the gearbox not engine power.
higher the ratio the lower the top speed so the faster the accelleration.
If you were to do 1/4 miles you would play with the gears to give a terminal top speed at the end of the 1/4 doing the 1/4 faster. etc.
