follwing on from the first thread,
the engine bay started off like this...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/100_1331.jpg
naff welding (all tho it held up 4 all most a yr)
i showed the body shop how i wanted, and i started takin the paint back to bare metal for rewelding and smoothing
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/noloom.jpg
we welded up every hole that wasnt needed, all the loom holes where plated over and smoothed,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/smoooth1.jpg
the bay was primerd and made fully smooth
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/primerd6.jpg
then painted,1 first time we werent happy with a few bits so it was rubbed down, and smoothed in a few bits and re painted,
polished up to a high shine!

she came home,so i could re wax her up and re fit my brake line (new and hidden as poss)
then to day we set about re fitted my painted up and clean engine
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/engineblackweb.jpg
then fit the engine in from the top with out scratching anyof the sexy paint
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/smoothblue1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/engineblack3web.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/engineblack2web.jpg
got 2 finish off painting the block and cleaning up bits 2moz,
and get everything up and running, then the rest of the car will be done,
ready to b unvailed at billing,
finish extending my wiring loom and re fit a few bits
big big thanks to the guys at station body shop!
big thanks to sarah gte(me ladie!)
big thanks to dan and tom the legends and sharon for the tool run
let me know what u think.....

Fairplay to you for going in through the top!

Benn

Ben

looks mint, take it your going for show car looks rather than function then. looks dam smooth tho.

also im interested in what the cav wiper motor has to offer, and the corsa servo

-Bruce-

im also interested what a cavi wiper motor would do for us?

only thing i can think of for using the corsa servo is that it sits where the battery is an frees up space along the bulk head.

Surely the torque and vibration of the XE will cause that filler to crack, or am i missing something?????

I WAS THINKING THAT

MIGHT LOOK A BIT SHIFTY THEN

Should be fine, mine is done simaliar to his. Only mine used flexable fiberglass over thick welded in metal. Bay was also seam welded first. Then a very small skim of filler to make sure it was completely smooth!

Karl's engine bay has been smoothed now since 2002 and hasnt cracked!

as keith said,
thick metal is welded in,after the bay was re welded
then flexi fiberglass is used 2get the last bit of shape,
then a very small skim of filler 2 make sure its smooth

u'll b amazed how little a nova bay move's even with an xe in there
have a mate who didnt weld his engine bay,
its still fine after 2yrs aswell

Ben

I dont think welding the bay is essential, just optional.

Benn

same,
but cause of the smoothing it needed 2 b

corsa servo fits in battery tray as does cav wiper motor.... even less stuff in the bay :)

I would agree with that yes, if i was having it smoothed i would have it welded, if not then i wouldnt weld it.

A top job there mate, have always loved the smooth look, I'm sure it will not crack if the welds are in place and the fillers not too thick as you've said. Good on you!

Like the arty B&W photos too lol

And surely being right above the brake pedal the linkage has far less distance to travel in order to work, so in theory wouldn't it result in a better brake pedal?

yeh i would have thought that is correct jules, as you will have less play in the brake pedal if you mount the master cylinder on the driver side!! im sure i have seen a pic of it before not sure though. very interested in the cavi wiper motor set up?

I had a valver for nearly 5 yrs mate, 2 x magazine featured, 6,000 miles a year and I never had the seam welding..... still looked immaculate when I broke it.....

With the vibration and harshness of the engine, I personally thought it may be a problem having any filler at all under the bonnet....

Just interested really......

the filler is only a very thin skim,
the rest of metal,
so it should b ok....
