Engines now back home, finished. Just needs a few bits n bobs and then safely loaded back into my enginebay! :D

I'd like to thank Steven Gault for everything, he know's his stuff, and done a fantastic job on the engine. Its not only filled with fresh parts, it also looks fresh on the outside. He's also been fantastic with answering all my questions, and teaching me loads about how my engine works, and how to get gains! Cheers Mate!

And here it is:

that looks soooo lovely, wow!!! whats the spec/output of that beast???

krobinson
27-08-04, 11:39 PM
I'm waiting on Steven sending me a complete Spec. But basically its got some nice headwork, t40's, piper 285 cam, vernier, bored to 1331, and lightened and balanced fly, and balanced crank.

To go into great detail would take age's tho, but its been build with all new parts, new valves, tappets/followers, pistons etc etc

Output? wont know till the car's finished, but the rollers that steven use's are very very accurate.

that really is impressive mate. good work that man.

just to put a spanner in the works tho. wouldent the money have been better spent on a 1.4 or 1.6 16v rather than the 8v, or even a 1.6 as if its your road car then your not restricted to engine size like you are in competition. (i can see why you have done it tho as im doing an 8v just cos i love the power they give)

krobinson
29-08-04, 11:30 AM
I coulda spend the money on a 2.0L turbo, and had 200bhp and more!

Like Cambridge once said:

Why tune a 1.0, get a 1.2
Why tune a 1.2, get a 1.3/1.4
Why tune a 1.3/1.4, get a 1.6
Why tune a 1.6, get a 2.0L 16v
Why tune a 2.0L 16v, get a 2.0L turbo!

Where does it end?

I did it as a starting point, to learn about engines, and mostly because of insurance. I'm in Northern ireland, where my insurance will be over 2k for this car as it stands! maybe more!

Keith

29-08-04, 11:37 AM
:o

true but you have nearly a 1.4 there now with 100 bhp. with the mods and the cash you have spent on that you could have a 1.4 16v with 160 bhp or even more.

i do love small 8v ( or even big like mine) engines that have been put together well as it proves that they really can be competative

Phil_G
29-08-04, 12:20 PM
HI,

im with keith on this... Ive gone for a 8v as they provide an excellent point to start from if you want to learn about engines, building techniques etc. Also a 1.4/1.6 16v with 150+horse or whatever it may have would cost a proportional amount more to insure.

Also being a pessamistic bastard, i like having eight less valves to bend :P

Ive yet to see a 1.4 16v or 1.6 16v thats in a road car with that kind of power,.

Of the ones Ive set up on rollers for people they are well short!!! fairy tales.

But then again- Keith knows of the 185bhp 1.6 one i done recently! but its about 2K dearer than his engine!

Most people go for a bigger engine coz they have no idea of what a good small engine is like!

I like to call them "Max power figures"

People add up BHP and rarely get it properly tested, and some go to bad RR's.

Carbs, +20bhp, Cam +10bhp, headwork +15bhp, manifold +5bhp, exhaust, +5bhp, oh my SRI must be 135BHP now!!

there's the 1.4 16v N/A nova on here that was at PV (think its CP's)
thats producing 140-150bhp.

benji
30-08-04, 02:50 PM
cp's isn't really a road car though

Breeny
30-08-04, 03:06 PM
Why not? It used to get used on the road before slicks were fitted.. The other one from Velos has even more power as it revs a lot more.. if you look at the power graph on CP's engine the power just goes in a straight line until the rev limit kicks in..

Steven Gault just needs to get his head out of his own arse..

Looks stunning Keith, if it goes half aswell as it looks I'd be chuffed :)

Jim

S_Gault
30-08-04, 04:24 PM
well if you take the time to read what i say..

i said of those that ive set up.. all arent

play the numbers game if you want.. your the fool if you do.

On the track is where it counts , go and watch my engines.. you'll see the time i spend putting them together so i have little time for putting it up my head up my arse.

I rely on cold hard fact dyno figures and flowbench developement, not advertising bullshit or internet chat..

For example- heres some data you wont get with your boy racer engine suppliers.. 16V vaux head on the flowbench flows- around 120cfm depending on casting.. so 1 valve flows 60 odd. That valve is 32mm.

Keiths 1.3SR head flows 73cfm on a 33mm valve! Draw your own conclusions on the various valve effieciencys!

Both done at 10inH2O pressure drop.

Steven Gault just needs to get his head out of his own arse..

No need for that!

Steven know's his stuff, if you choose not to believe him, thats your call, but no need for the remarks!

He's had loads of car's with owners Claiming huge figures, only to find they aint what they seem. Dont tell me you've never seen anyone claim to have 200bhp, only to have 170 on the rollers!

Cheers for the comments guys!

Hope it runs as well as you hope mate. Would be good to see the car perform as well as it looks.

There are lots of road cars fitted with 1.6 & 1.4 16vs producing accurate 150BHP +

it would be very unprofessional of me to tell someone how much it cost.

each engine i do is done slighyl diff, as each owner wnats diff things

and also each engine needs different things to make it servicable again.

Hi Keith,

By the the looks of the finished product it looks like its been worth the wait, spot on im really liking it, after having a chat with you on msn ive decided to keep my nova and im goin for a rebuilt 1.4SR running T40s it wont be as high spec as yours but ill get done what i can with the funds available. Cant wait to see yours at the shows next year :D

Craig

a similar spec to keiths can be achived for a lot less than it cost him, his engine has been totally rebuilt with new parts through-out. my 1400 has cost me around a grand, maybe a bit less. i'd have though his will be more powerful than mine, and even if it's not(and i will be surprised if it's not) then it will certianly last longer.
