It's actually some 0.25" rubber hose. I shuved some welding rod through the centre of the hose to form the shape of the scoop underside, the scoop was fixed down solid on the bonnet using its mounting screws, and the hose lays snuggly between them both. I didn't want to mold the scoop to the bonnet using fibreglass, as it always cracks around the seem.

you don't.
if you fit without holes in the bonnet yu end up with a jkhilton scoop!
flying off the bonnet as the air has nowhere to go, so forces scoop upwards.

Ian are you saying that no matter what you do you are always gonna get water seeping through on to the engine with vents.(not jkhilton style ones) Cos its something I have always wondered about. with the gtir vent you get crazy amount of holes in it dont you. Is water seepage much of a problem with your car ?

it doesn't allways end up a jkhilton scoop if you don't cut the hole, I have has a scooby scoop on my car for the past 6 months without a hole cut and it has been fine. It depends on how well it is fixed down I suppose.

I dont like the idea of having a a vent with no actual holes in the bonnet cos then you cant blag it as an actual performance mod! Im not really looking to put one in anyway I am just curious. Cant water damage the engine especially if it is hot?
Ian do you get steam coming through the holes in the vent if it rains?
also the nova in total vaux this month (not martin hill's the other one, with the kingdom bumper) It had about 3 vents in it but it looked like no actual holes. I am not dissing anyone who does this at all but if you where on a shoot with a mag you wouldnt open the bonnet and let them see that your vents are fake. Am I wrong ? Im sure it had no actual holes in the bonnet.

i would like to know about the rain causing damage thing. as i have a huge vent. i was thinking putting perspecs over 3 of the 4 holes to get less rain in.

why not make something to put on the underside of your bonnet, so anywater that comes in will run down and out without touching the engine??

its a good idea tom, but don't forget the reason there is a hole in the bonnet in the first place, to let cool air in, if you shelter rain from the engine you will be re-directing cool air to an area you don't want it to be.

we need to invent a material that lets through air freely but not water. hmmmmmmmmmm

Water thru' a vent towards the rear of the engine will be of little consequence as usually there isn't actually all that much of it anyway.
I blasted a power washer at my vent with the bonnet up from a distance and the grill bit in the vent diffuses a lot of it. The water tends to run along the underside of the bonnet towards the bonnet seal rather than gush all over the engine.
I would have thought that it might result in more salt related corrosion to the engine in winter maybe?

Damian how have you secured your scoop to the bonnet

I fibre glassed four bolts to the bottom of the scoop, drilled four holes in the bonnet for the bolts to go through and bolted it on fairly tight. (not too tight or the fibre glass wil crack)

lol exactly how john hilton had his fitted.
water doesnt seem to be any problem, not much gets through, and if it does it just lands on the rocker cover.
you can see steam slightly when its cold or if rain is getting in, but not so rain as the hole is further back than the intake holes, if you know what i mean.
the hole is right over the throttle bodies (ideal :D ) but front of scoop is much further forward.

Ive got a big problem with my scoop! Sat just underneath the hole is a weber with no air filter on it. the air filer wont fit in the space between the bonnet and the carb. ive had everything go down my carb from flies to leaves (not good) i can remeber when i took it to milton keynes and i had to stip the carb right down 3 bloody times. thank god the flies have gone no anyway :)!!!

cant u put a apir of tights over your carb, so it still lets the air in but stops all the shitty things getting in???
