Amp Question

Hi i am pretty new to amps and subs etc as previously i have only had 6x9's. I have just brought a 12" sub in a box which can handle 700W and a 500W amp to power it. What i was wondering is if you look at the image below which is the best way to wire an amp to a single sub to get the most power out of the amp. Also am i right in thinking that the second image is the best as the first is only using one channel of the amp hence not all the power where as the second is using both channels to power the sub and should give it the maximum power (500W) or am i wrong. Any help on this would be much appreciated cheers.

bridge it mate, if you are only going to be running one sub.
