After rebuilding my engine and finally getting it started it ran over like a bag of wank! A mechanic i know said it needs a tune and it will be fine. Checked the timing and it looks spot on. Will a tune sort it out? How do they tune it?

The engines been rebored and the head skimmed.
Cheers :D

First time I ran mine before set up it was slower than a 1.2.

All it needs is timing done then adjust the CO2 screw on Airflow meter with a gas tester plugged in and get somewhere near the correct levels.

Will go alot better then!

if youve skimmed the head then you have successfully retarded the cam timing!

how can you get that back then steven ?

So what your sayin is that the timing indicators on the pulleys are no longer accurate?

The engine idles irracticaly (cant spell) and will try cut out. Is this normal for a rebuilt engine?

Ive got a feelin that ive timed it up 180 degrees out!

no nothing wrong with marks, but think about it a minute guys!!

your belt is a fixed length.. you skim the head, the cam pulley is now closer to the crank pulley, so the slack in the belt has to be taken up.. one pulley will rotate as you turn water pump to take up slack.

To correct its a matter of an adjustment in the cam pulley , this is the reason i make my own verniers from the std pulley (as the others were outlaowed in a race championship at that time)

do you just enlarge the hole in the cam pully to give some extra movement ??

how much movement do they require ?? is it as much as a tooth out ??

does it make much difference to power output ??

no i make a proper vernier on a rotary table of a milling machine.

how much to move it-- same as above- needs measureing, dpends on how much you took off head- and it can be as much as a tooth!.

does it affect power- yes, big time!

im running a 1400 block with a 1200 head
this has been skimmed in the past but by how much i dont know

would i notice the difference if i was to move the cam pully around one tooth and try it ??

how is the best method of measuring where the pully alignment mark should be ??

cheers

moving a hole tooth mate will probably be detremental to your power.

Only big skims will probably need quite this much movement i guess.

A vernier will allow you to move it 1/4 or 1/2 a tooth i guess.

prob need it on a r/r to get it spot on.

My engine block has been skimmed aswell as my head (small amount off head)

Is it worth buying an ?80 vernier to see if i can gain anything.

(can't realy make my own, havn't got equipment).

get 2 old pulleys. stare at them for a few mins until you figure out a way to make one, then get to a machine shop and get it made. even if it doesn't work out much cheaper, it'll be a bit of fun.

Yeah it went in, there was nothin wrong with the starter, the head was pressure locked with petrol. Its now runnin(not very well) wont return to idle and cuts out! :x

The engine needs runnin in though at the moment its in the garage cos the clutch is screwwed so hopefully it'll be fixed by the end of the day.

Ive had enough if my nova now am thinnkin of puttin it off the road and buyin a nice gsi!
