i was driving along the other night and i started to hear this hum from the rear end, at first i thought it was the bb4 but it carried on when i dropped it out of gear, what can it be?

wheel bearing at the rear. get someone to sit in the back and listen to which side it is when you dip the clutch

or just jack it up and see which one has play.

OR do it properly and replace both at the same time.

A standard system. Anything is better than a BB4!

you don't need to do both bearings, it's pretty easy to distinguish which one is humming

8 pounds for a bearing kit (Rear) at motormania, same price as almost anywhere else, can be done DIY jst look in your haynes

typical garage price is about 20 (minimum) quid plus parts (works cheaper if u buy the bearing ureself)

front r about 30 quid minimum

to ensure a similar wear time you "should" do both bearings at once

rears are ?18 for a kit (usually, so that you get a good quality item)

fronts are ?20 for a kit (but you need a press to do it properly)

may as well do both at the same time, and do it soon.

I had a bearing lock up on a mk2 fiesta and it wasn't a fun experience.

(waits for: 'shunt av driv'n a crappy ford den innit')

i just done my front left bearing. it turns out the hub was worn away slightly and the wheel was a going round not quite true.

Got a fresh hub and bearing on there now and its made loads of difference.

Handling is v. much better and the brakes feel twice as firm.

i didn't need a press to do the job though.

so did you hammer the new hub, new bearing and upright together snowface?

where did you buy the new hub from? was it ?90+VAT from vauxhall?

a cheaper way to do it, using less effort is go to a scrappy and tax a whole hub of a nova,

u may get one with a good bearing, or one with a bad bearing.

a less costly and time effective alternative of paying for someone to press a bearing in

if it's not pressed then ure just asking for trouble,

i got a hub from scrappy for ?10 complete with the thing it attaches to and the drive shaft.

Only needed hub off it though and got a new bearing from motor factors.

Then hammered it slightly then let the hub pull itself in to the bearing bit when i tightened the nut on the shaft.

its not often it comes out and goes back in so easily without damaging the hub, the bearing or the upright, I've managed without once, and damaged 2 others. its just luck depending on the state of each one

hopefully it'll be ok, but you may find it doesn't last that long. if you have to do it again i'd suggest a press.
