hi guys lookin to buy a nova gsi but only problem is its got 180k on the clock. also it has a blown headgasket.
the car is a late one on an L plate and is a 1 owner car with full service history. completely standard. in white.
the headgasket i can take care of easily enough but the mileage is a bit worrying.
the guy wants 700 notes for it but i think that may be a bit steep considering, what do you guys think.
my mate reckons the engine is probly shagged but i'm thinkin i could still pick up an engine cheaply enough. i'm goin to go have a look tomorrow and see what i think.

any comments would be appreciated.

If it has 180k on the clock and a blown head gasket i would say a new engine would be wise instead of just fixing the head gasket, but if it has 1 previous owner he could of used it for trips up and down the country.

Take a look what the rest of the car is like, like rust, wear n tear on interior, engine bay, basically everything else BUT the engine.

and ?700 for a nova with blown head gasket and 180k, to pay that the body work must be MINT! when you see the car take a goo whack off ?700 for the fact of the engine being shagged.

Did you miss the point where he said it was a L plate GSi?

As I said on MiG - Rebuilt and uprate the engine, if you get another engine to put in then there's no guarentee that what you're buying is going to be any good where as if you rebuild what's already there (and add some tasty bits as you go) then you know it's gonna be solid aslong as it's done well.

I'd haggle on the price (but then I always do anyway!), get it home and take the whole lump out and build it up cleaning it up along the way, you should be left with a decent engine, a clean engine bay and a nice tidy looking engine to go in it.

take in what these guys have said, if you think its worth the money you want to buy it for then do what you think. have a look for smoke out the back, and the oil pressure. good luck

rust is the main issue... engine can be rebuilt/swapped..... rust is harder to sort ..... my H reg nova has 260k on it :o

Just buy the thing and drop a new engine in there! as peester said that is fooking cheap for an L-reg Gsi!

remember it will be a c16se with dispac..... so you will have to swap all the parts from one engine to the new one

Which is why it'd probably be easier just to rebuild what's there and uprate it as you go along.

Not worth much IMHO as at that millage the shell is tired not just rust but structually its probably pretty worn. Rick

i'd try and get it a bit lower than a grand
but it is a L reg after all and they are really rare
