View Full Version : 7k on a car, what would you have?

benji

i am looking in to buying a new car later this year or early next. for many reasons but mainly because i am fed up of throwing cash at the nova.

so what would you have?? 7/8k to spend

my list so far, what i am most likely to go for at the top,

alfa romeo GTV 3.0 24v V6
E36 BMW M3 (insurance might be a problem)
astra coupe turbo
Ford racing puma (bit out of price range)
seat leon/ibiza cupra
v6 golf mk4

If you can stretch it ?9k seems to be alright for a good Lexus IS 200 ES. The mk4 Golf GTI turbo is in range there as well. Alfa GTV, Fiat Coupe, if not an M3 then any of the E36 coupe's - maybe a 4x4?

2 x 3.0 V6 omega Elites and 2 tanks of fuel for them

Breeny
27-07-04, 10:11 PM
The IS200's are slow..

Sadly the M3 would get my vote genuinely.. they are awesome cars.

benji
27-07-04, 10:12 PM
alfa gtv is the one that i fancy. dont like bm's as a rule but the M3 is awsome. not to keen on the lexus. i am after somthing relitavly fast, and not too common.

My mates got an Ibiza Cupra, says its a great car.

That list is quite varied, its not like your sticking to just hot hatches, so you've plenty of choice.

Just take your time and don't buy a car thats at the end of it's life.

A friend of mine bought an Sti WRX Scooby for around ?7k. However, you need to think about insurance and running costs and practicality too. Well, maybe not practicality as I dont know what you're going to be using it for.

the nova's staying. so i want somthing comfy with all the toy's. but it still has to be quick.

MK4 golf TDI.

fast, and good on fuel

Stuart
27-07-04, 10:19 PM
a newer 3.2 Omega Elite then ;) lol

id look at newer Alfas personally. they are lovely

and the IS200 is bliss. not slow at all (unless you compare it to say an M5 or V12 7 series lol)

benji
27-07-04, 10:23 PM
i really like the gtv's but they arn't that quick. the M3's will all be shagged at that price and i doubt i could insure 1.

the puma's i like alot but they are around 10k, and not so comfy. the ibiza is in there because iliked them at the motor show, same applies to the leon

benji
27-07-04, 10:28 PM
i thought the IS200's are around 150bhp

golfs are over-priced, over-rated, and common as muck.

Get 7 novas. One for each day of the week.

my mate paid 16k for a smart roadster. he could of had a SLK for that

Stuart
27-07-04, 11:07 PM
i drove an SLK, even with the roof down it was VERY clostrophobic! lol

the windscreen is very very close to your head.

im going to go to MK and test drive a smart roadster (for a laugh, i mena id never buy one) just to see what they are like

benji
27-07-04, 11:09 PM
crap

there you go i saved you the effort.

Stuart
27-07-04, 11:13 PM
any real justification for that?

bad handling? wont slide etc?

benji
27-07-04, 11:18 PM
it's a smart car.

i've not driven it, but it is not fast enough, needs more power

FURTHER TO PREVIOUS ANSWERS.......

I would buy a Sierra Cosworth (original 3 door big-wing)
You will get an absolute minter for ?7k, get FORD reliability and cheap-ish spares, an ULTRA COOL car, power, tuneability, no depreciation and CLASSIC INSURANCE

M3's are a nice quick motor but someone I know had one and bills for it were ENORMOUS. How does ?436 sound for a broken electric window motor???? And ?180 for a service kit (oil filter/air filter/fuel filter/fuel/sparks ONLY!) and ?7k will only get you a non-evo 3.0litre that is 286bhp, and a Valver nova with 180 bhp will keep up with.... and group 20 insurance.

Now if you said E30 M3, now your rocking!! ?7k would get you a top-drawer car, classic insurance again but group 20 insurance, and expensive if anything goes wrong, plus the aggro of LHD...

Speaking of LHD...What about a Golf Rallye??? Uber-cool Wagen (sic) that are held as the holy grail in golf circles.... ?7k woulg either get you an absolute minter, or you can get one for ?3-4K and spend the rest on tuning!!!!

I'd still go for the Cossie though!!! When was the last time you saw one on the road????

I'm in the same position.

When i have my Nova finished, i'm gonna concider buying a new/newish car. I was gonna hold out for the new Corsa GSI 1.6 Turbo, but vauxhall have scrapped the idea, and are waiting till 2006 for the New Corsa :(

I'm concidering going looking for an Astra GSI Turbo Next year, what group insurance are they? Problem is the insurance here in NI, i might not be able to insure the damn thing, even tho i'll be 22 with a years no claims!

an e36 m3 for 7k will be a shed.....
Sevicing on M tech cars is loads and will sting you if you are not prepared for it.
I wholeheartedly recommend an E36 coupe, (i do drive one after all), just beware the M badge- you could get something like a 328i sport on a later plate for that much. Almost as fast and with the facorty options will look alomst identical, but without the ridiculous running and insurance costs.

Whoever said that for 7k you will get a top drawer e30 m3 is dreaming- i looked at one last week that was 14k.. they are going UP in value, unless of course you buy a shed that needs loads and loads of work.

Audis are nice too. A6 2.8 quattro sport.... just been offered a fully loaded one for 7.5k, and its on rs4 rims too. higher mileage but thats not really an issue

is200 will make you look asian

Fiat coupe 20v Turbo all the way!
I test drove one yesterday, im definately getting one after the clio
Awsome interiors, gorgeous looks, 220bhp standard, lsd, quicker than an m3 in a straight line...infact quicker than most things in a straight line.....absolutely awsome, no one would insure me on one till im at least 21 tho

probably a bit off the point, but 4 whoever said how often do u see a sierra cossie on the road, i cycle past 4 everyday, parked next to 2 skylines, an fto and a focus rs in our work car park so id say there fairly common

i am wanting a car that is newer, so a cossie is out of the question. iwant somthing with full leather, climate control, everything electric. while at the same time being quick without having to tune it. i went to a alfa romeo dealer today. i like the gtv quite a lot but i have heard horror storys about crap build quality and them always breaking down.

failing that i could get a scooby. you can get uk turbo's for 4-5K now so 7k would get me a good one.

Stuart
28-07-04, 05:40 PM
but bear in mind the STUPID running costs of a scooby. my mate bought a uk spec wrx (new one) 4 months ago, hes sold it for a clio 182 as its cheaper to run lol.

benji
28-07-04, 05:45 PM
running cost's won't bother me. my mate has a scooby and he has never mentioned that the cost's were bad. the only problem with a scooby is that every former saxo owner and his dog has one now

benji
28-07-04, 06:19 PM
just got a few insurance quotes off tesco. all fully comp, if buying early next year when i will be 23 with 3 years no claims(hopefully)

98 alfa gtv v6 - ?900
97 scooby uk turbo - ?900
95 e36 m3 - ?1300
02 clio 172 - ?800
90 porche 911 turbo - ?950
astra coupe turbo - ?750

cheaper than i thought, look's like i'm getting old

Freak
28-07-04, 06:25 PM
4 of them (scooby, m3, clio and porsche) will ALL require a Cat 1 alarm and a tracker before they will insure you

benji
28-07-04, 06:27 PM
i put a rac track star down, don't know how much they are? ?500?

benji
28-07-04, 06:30 PM
what determines if they need a tracker.

peester
28-07-04, 06:54 PM
the ibiza cupra. if you can; get the 1.8 turbo. tuneable as fook.

Stuart
28-07-04, 06:59 PM
how the feck are you lot getting such cheap quotes on scoobys??

i was getting quotes of ?1300 + (FC that is) for a uk spec . 23 5yrs ncb no points or crashes in a very "decent" area lol

the omega is ?440 (and thats ?100 more expensive than if i went to NU, purely cos im lazy) and she will do 140 easy lol

benji
28-07-04, 07:06 PM
tesco's. fully comp. garaged, bad to average area, tracker, 23 with 3yrs no claims, no convictions ?950. 97 p reg uk turbo

didn't realize the fiat coupe was that quick. faster than a M3? or a scoooby?

The 20v turbo is, the boost is limited in 1st and 2nd so once your up and running its fucking quick!

0-100 is around 14secs.....thats timed with 2 people, 20kg of luggage, full tank etc, so should be nearer low 13's

My answer-german inport, 1990 non-evo absolute minter, all taxes paid and MOT'd ?6000. One of our upholsterers at work bought it from Bavaria Imports in Leeds. I saw it, it needs NOTHING and sailed through it's MOT. I'll be going to leeds soon to look at one (NOT to buy though, just to test pilot!)

So's a big wing cossie ! And you'd may as well buy a 328i and put the m3 kit on if you're buying an e36, no difference really in performance and MILES cheaper to own/run

Cos the m3 has a different engine (3.0/3.2) different interior 0-60 is half a second to a second quicker, top end is quicker, different wheels, bodykit, M3 is available in "SPECIAL" factory colours, stiffer and lower suspension etc etc.... exclusivity (???!!!)

U r missing my point...... u could buy a 328, put the M3 kit/wheels on it and ALMOST have M3 performance for a distinctly NON-M3 price!!!!

My mates just bought a Fiat Coup? 20v Turbo. It's a nice car and is fast up to 100mph. It comes with Brembo brakes and the styling is lovely, perhaps not to everyones taste.

It comes with 220BHP as standard and does the 1/4mile in 14.6. (Whoever raced the one at Santa Pod must have either raced a 16v Turbo - 1/4 in 15.3 - or a non turbo version or the owner was a pansy :P)

It wasnt as fast as a friends WRX Sti, but it was still nice to drive.
