View Full Version : should i stick with my 1400?
or get a 1600?
i've been thinking about this alot recently. i go on holiday at the end of august, and when i get back i am gonna get my engine sorted out properly. bottom end rebuild, B++ head, new carbs(maybe), close ratio box and FD. but should i do it to my 1400 or get a 1600?
the thing i'm thinking about is if i do a 1400 i stil need a new engine to work on so mine's not off the road, and doing the work to a 1600 will cost the same but give more power. i already have a cam which will fit either engine, i will need more head work so my current head will not be needed. and i will buy new carb's jetted to suit whichever engine i go for
The reason i want to keep the 1.4 is that there are not many(if any?) really quick 1400 8v's about. but i will always think i should of done a 1.6
how much difference is there between the 2 engines at this spec? the car will be used mainly for track days so which engine is better suited for that?
cheers
ben
ps. i didn't post this in technical because it's people's opinions i want, not technical info.

Whats a proper car?! you havnt explained that option! lol
bottom end rebuild, B++ head, new carbs(maybe), close ratio box and FD.
well you may as well do all that to a 1600, but in a new shell, keeping the 1400 as it is. 2 novas are better than 1!
Whats a proper car?! you havnt explained that option! lol it wouldn't let me post just 2 options, but a proper car would be 1 with more seats, less noise and more reliable

I voted "tune the 1400"
Its already pretty damn quick, and could be alot quicker! I think its far more impressive to get good gains, and good times from a small engine, than it is to just wack in a big engine.
Your kinda Expected to have a quick car when you have a 1600 engine in a car like a Nova. But when you beat a much bigger engined car in a 1300/1400, its much much more impressive! And thats one of the reasons i've went down the 1300 route, when the cash could have easily had me a nice 2.0L!

stick with the 1400, i want some competiton  also its cheap road tax for anything below 1500cc
go for a 1600 mate i think there more tunable and you've got a bit more power without changing any thing :)
think of it this way
1.4... nahh tune a 1.6
1.6 nahhh stick an XE in
XE... nahh stick an LET in
LET... nahh get an EVO lol
id personally stay with the 1.4 as its a little different. and appart from the bottom end work. all mods are transferable to a 1.6 block is you get a bit !bored" with the 1.4.

i would say keep 1400 much better when you beat someone and they ask "whats in that?" and you say 1400 and there mounth hits the deck!!
just for that reason stick to the 1400!!
bruce
i say tune the 1400 aswell but it depends on what power YOU want cos like you say the 1600 has more to begin with and then if youre gonna do all the work to it you will finish with a bigger amount if you get my drift
so the choice is yours lol :D :D :D
i would like to stay with the 1.4 but i seems pointless. for the same cash i could have a faster 1600.
wasnt it MC who made a WRX pull over while in his 1.4 ? lol
lol. that's ace. i presume it was on a track.
who voted to buy a proper car?
erm if by track you mean the A127 to southend then yes it was
Keep the 1400... or part ex for my Let.. lol

Nope, steven told me last night he has the bottom end completely finished, and the heads finished, just needs put together, timing set etc.
Once i get it back i need:
Hoses, mounts, bailey tank etc.. all costing a bloody fortune!
I'll be v late in the year before i have it running, but when it does, rest assured i'll have a huge smile on my face :D

LMFAO! i voted for the keep the 1400 actually! :P
purely for the novelty factor, theres gonna be a lot of quick 1600's around soon.....id stick with the 1400 so you can say you have the fastest! :D
Keep the 1.4 Benji.
The only reason I went for a 1.6 is because I part-exd my 1.4 for CP's 1.6. I was ready to strip my 1.4 down and start tuning it. The smaller the engine, the more respect you will get (not that it's about respect - dam, knew I shouldnt have watched the fast and the furious last night ;)).
I think you will get more satisfaction from the 1.4.
Like Stu said, if you get the 1.6, you'll be thinking, should I have got a Valver, and so on. At least with the 1.4 you can have a rapid car with a small engine, then when you're ready make the jump up to a 2.0 16v.
