I was just cleaning my engine up, when i noticed that on the gear linkage thing on top of the gearbox, there is an inverse pattern of where the gears are and it shows a 5-speed selection but my car is a 4-speed.

I know its a bit of a long shot but i want a 5-speed box was wondering if this means that at some point my car was fitted with a 5-speed box but never had the right selector put in.... :?

If not, do all Novas including 4-speeds have the 5-speed picture on their gearboes as this doesnt seem to make sense.

Also according to Haynes, all Novas after Sept '88 were fitted with 5-speed boxes, so why is mine a 4-speed but is a 1989 F-reg?

hmm sounds interesting.

Well, basically, if ure car sits at 70mph in 4th at not too many revs, then ure car is a 4 speed. The way to convert your linkage so that it "activates" the 5th gear is by cutting a plastic block of the gear lever (i think-sure i saw that in haynes)

My car is a 1992 CARB, when it should be an SPi

It sounds like they used up bits they had left and put 5speed patterned linkage on your 4 speed box !? prehaps, i'm not sure if that'd work n match up.

Maybe ure box has been changed in the past !? to a 4 speed box ?

yeh i was thinking that maybe it had a gearbox failure in the past and so they stuck on a 5-speed but not the selector.

When at 70+ it is revving really high, so high that i feel i darent push it further, but it seems worse since i have had my weber carb on cos the engine is louder.

no all over 4 speed gear boxes apart from those fitted to 1.0s had a 5 speed selector (if you do get yourself a 5 speed box you will have to cut the plastic bit under the gaitor so that your stick will go to the position for 5th)

and there were carb models in 1992 i think it was the flair model irc

u dont always need to cut the notch off the selector

my 4 speed stick from a 1.0 was fine with both F13's and the current F15 and selects all gears without needing to remove the notch

you could allways just change the clusters over i guess
slam the 5 speed clusters in a 4 speed box
saves taking the box / shafts off
just need to change the final drive pinion over to the new cogs
