the head is off my car at the moment while i change heads to a 1200 item
normally i have put the lifters in the vise and squeezed out all the old oil
and fitted them dry back in the engine for which on startup for a few minutes they are rattly
is this correct or should i leave the oil inside them??

You have to sqeeze them out. I didn't and the car wouldn't start. They should be fine after a while

shove them in a tub of fresh oil and compress them by hand a few times untill u cant any more then when the heads ready to go on remove them from the tub dry the excess oil off and fit them to the head

engine should fire up rattle free first time - i know mine did

yeah thats right, you're supposed to get all the old oil out my squeezing them. then charge them up by squeezing them as much as possible in clean oil. its says so in the bible iirc
