2-3 litres on just a basic paint colour. More if its flip or something like the paints that are 'in' at the moment, marble etc.

its just vaux black (non metalic)

another thing is the guy in the shop said it was a 50/50 mix, celulose paint by the way- is this correct because other folk have said it should be 75/25

Experience Ive had has varied with cellulose. One lot I used was about 10% but another time was more like 25% because of varying manufacturers. You need a viscosity (sp) measurer to get the mix right.

it all depends on the maunfacturer. different makes have a different viscosity. as a rule its usually around 60/40 (paint to thinners) however im sure that if the guy in the shop said its 50/50, he sells it all day n should know. if in doubt ask for the tech sheet. bear in mind that two litres of paint thinned etc can give u three to four litres in total which is a fair few guns full so it will go quite far. iv just got 2 litres of 2k solid paint. this mixes at 2:1 with catalyst + thinners which should be fine for a full shell respray.

The paint im using is 'autopaint International'.

so i'll just do as the guy said and go 50/50.

thanks

i got mine from auto paint too. do as al wilson says with a viscosity measurer. its like a small funnel - you pour a measure of paint in it n time how long it takes to go through the manufacturers tech sheet should tell you what time it should take. then add thinners or more paint till the time matches. if you cant get one then test the paint on something first to make sure its right. bear in mind that you can always flat off and compound out any runs, orange peel etc but job will take a bit longer.

ne ideas how many litres would be required for a metalflake finish. would it be the same as a solid colour, as the flake is put on top of the base colour

also how msny litres would cover the outside of the car alone cos there aint no point sprayin the whole shell metalflake

cheers

not sure about that. again i suppose it depends on the manufactorer. id ask your paint suppliers. but i think your engine bay will look mental in metal flake! :D

glad someone asked this, i just had my car resprayed in metal flake :D
looks very nice !!!

anyway the amount of base colour will differ depending on your paint that you want, metallic paint is mixed with the metal flakes prior to applying where as a solid colour has the metal flakes applied afterwards in with a clear laquer !!!

depending on the size of flakes will also depend on how much laquer to use, mine are mini flake from HOk and they are applied as 30 grams of flakes to half a litre of laquer !!!
my car used 90-100 grams of flakes so theris two litres of clear.
plus if the flakes are still felt abnove the laquer once touch dry then more is needed to apply over the top !!!

hope this makes sense
