i have seen loads of twin 40's for sale on ebay and elsewhere, now i know that weber are meant to be the best but there are other makes e.g dellorto and solex. Are twin 40's car specific tho or can you just get a set and sitick them on any nova???

keep away from solex they are a bit shity mate.
there's nowt wrong with dellorto's but I'll always recomend webers, tou can fit these to just about any nova except a 1.0 just make sure to get the correct inlet manifold and get them rejeted and in some cases they have to be rechoked deppending on the engine size. :D

dell'orto and weber are about the same, which ever you buy make sure you get a set which are set up for your car, or you could end up spending the same again on jet's and chokes

Whats so wrong with solex 40s? I've seen a few people on here say they're shite. I've no experience with them, but I have used twin choke downdraft solex carbs before and so have a few mates and we have found them to be reliable.
