got my new car (post pics 2nite) but i am used to the power of my old 1.4 sr which had full zorst sytem 1.3 head e.t.c. so i wanna engine swap my new car coz its only a 1.2
but wot engine shud i go 4?????????

anything above 1.6 is out of the question due to insurance and cost

i got some quotes from www.justnovas.demon.co.uk for engine conversions as follows:

1.4/1.3 sr engine supplied and fitted drive away price ?400
1.4 sr engine fully rebuilt bottom end, performance head cams e.t.c for just ?800 fully fitted supplied drive away price
1.6 gsi/gte engine supplied fitted drive away price ?700

I have about ?800 to spend so could afford any of the above.

if i got the standard 1.4 or 1.3 sr engine i could afford to put a set of twin 40's on and maybe a cam.

wot shud i do wots best for value, power, tuneability???

Thing is a 1.3 on t40's and cam is goin2 be approaching/equaling the power of the 1.6 gte/gsi so you may aswell get the 1.6. The 1.4 could be quick with t40'2 and cam but still if i were you i'd get the 1.6 and possably inthe future put t40's on it coz that'll fly :D

Fit the engine yourself, its not hard! You'll save ?00s off those quoted prices. Look in the parts for sale section, theres always engines going in there for reasonable money! Or get in touch with Ben or Will F, theyve always got loads of engines and bits for sale!

Im sure there will be someone round your way that would lend a hand in exchange for beer tokens if you get stuck!
Go for the 1600 and fit some 40s to it! :D

If you're worried about cost, then bear in mind the 1600 is insurance group 11 whilst the 1400 is 5/6 (7 for SR/i) or group 5 for a 1300. Also, the latter two will incur cheaper road tax.

for that sort of meny you could do a 2.0l

You can get 1600 engines for ?100 and 1.4/1.3's for ?50 or FREE if you look hard enough.

Insurance on a 2lt though is stupid depending on your age etc. Its out of the question for me (if i declare it). By the way ben its terry-any news on that glass and suspension? Hows the vectra?

I would go for either the 1.6 or a 1.4 sri engine, they are quick for 1.4's all they need is the timing advancing and and exhaust and they usually fly and only insurance group 7.

To give you an idea of insurance, i just got these three quotes:
(just to highlight the differences in price between each engine. The actual amounts will differ if you were to do this yourself, but the % difference between each one should stay roughly the same)

1.6 GTE: ?465
1.4 SR: ?417
1.3 SR: ?395

putting a 1.6 engine in a 1.2 will not make ur car a GTE, therefore u don't always insure it as a GTE (group 11). Company's that recognise engine conversions properly don't charge as much as group 11 money.

from a 1.2-1.3 you'll be looking at small money.
1.2-1.6 maybe ?100-?200 more if u are 18-19.

Just rough figures.

you will have got a lot of under 20s hopes up with your comments

pmsl.... u will find lots of companys will charge close to the insurance group of the engine as its the same power

in the case of novas when most of them are worth 50p and a packet of cheese and onion crisps its all abt the engine power really.......

Will

p.s. i know i babble on abt insurance but my advice is "quote before you buy" get it in writing if necessary....... they should do this because they will want your business....

I think you'll find it wont be like insuring a GTE because you'll be paying 25% extra on top of insuring a GTE! I just got a quote for putting a 2lt 16v in my gsi and they said they'd charge me the same as insuring an astra gsi plus 25%!! Stupid money. So i'm rebuilding a gsi engine on t40's and the rest of it because insurance company's take the piss :x

with regard to insurance.

its cheaper for me (23 5yrs noclaims etc) to insure a 3.0 V6 Omega, than is is for me to insure a nova GTE/GSI.

so think about it before you go modding away lol

That i can believe, for an extra ?200 over a GTE i can get a '98 Nissan 200SX S14a Touring (2.0 Turbo)

...i'd agree with that, its all very well them saying one thing on the phone but if you get the policy thru and its not what you wanted it'll be a hassle to sort it all out

People always come up with random insurance figures. it's a complete waste of time. Go through the yellow pages and make calls. Try companies you haven't heard of, and specialists (old car, young drivers, Vauxhall driver, etc.) . In my experience, if they advertise on telly then their quotes will take the piss. (eg. for my 1.3: Norwich Union-823, my lowest quote-465. 'Quote me happy' my arse)

Unless you go with a modded car specialist like Adrian Flux who insure your mods, you'll only get the book price for you car (approx. two bob ha'penny for a Nova) if you lose it, so go with the quote with the lowest premium and lowest excess.
