An exhaust valve went bang on my gsi engine last week, so took it out and stripped it and sent it down to the re-borers. They said ?300 for a 0.5mm overbore 4 new pistons, 4 new exhaust valves and skim the head.

My mate has got 2 gte engines said i can have 1 for ?50 he ses the bottom ends are in good nick.

So can i have gte bottom end and get my gsi head re-done and still use my courtney gsi cam, and all the gsi throttle body inlet and loom?

Basically is their any difference between the two engines?

cheers Nick. :D

Both engines are bosch jet-tronic.

There isnt any difference between the engine's aslong as its an early gsi, The later gsi engine's had a different loom and ecu and they were coil pack ran but the block its self is the same.
Go for the ?50 job but check the big end shells!
p.s. the cam will be ok! :D

ive had them both and am currently running the later dis pack, multec equipt injection system... the bottom ends are diffrent as it has a crank sensor.. they can be identified by the engine code e16se and c16se..
u are wanting e16se...

c16se (mine) latter gsi only

e16se gte/gsi up to k reg

other diffrences are c16se has no flappy airflowmeter
a diffrent compresion ratio
c16se has a lamda sensor
c16se has no egr crud
c16se has useless carbon canistor for evaporative loss control
plus loads of other bits

but the gte does 0-60 in 0.1seconds quicker. lol.

I'm sure thats not down to the engine though.

im liking ur air filter

did u make that fit or buy it etc etc?

no they are identical engine outputs so i dont know why 1 would be better than the other, maybe because the latter 1's are restricted by the cat..
the airfilter goes straight on looks good but suffers with the heat, so its not like that anymore i put it on the end of a tube lacated behind my light.

while writing this i have a total vauxhall magazine in front off me it says

CAR ENGINE SIZE CAMS/VALVES BHP LBF.FT 0-60TOPSPEED

gte e16se 1598cc ohc/8v 98@5600 99@3400 9.1 117
gsi c16se 1598cc ohc/8v 98@5800 99@3400 9.0 118

hopefully that will help u but personally i would pay 50 and throw the gte in

Thanks for all the help fellas.

After looking at the gte bottom end have decided to go ahead and get my gsi bottom end re-bored and new pistons.

The head will be gettin faced, new valves etc. And the bores are +1mm. Be runnin the engine with a courtney cam and piper full system and will be gettin a 4-1 manifold next pay day. so i rekon it should be runnin quite quick soon!

Is the c16se quicker than the e16se?

I know you've sorted it out now, but just thought i'd add (cos unless i've misread no-ones mentioned) that the e16se that came in GSis has a different ECU and loom to the e16se in the gte. My f reg GTE had a bosch ecu, different loom, different coil and a few other differences to my h reg GSi. can't tell all the differences as the GTE one is in pieces

ur right bosch and siemens ecu's were implemented

The boshe/seimens ecu change isnt a gte/gsi thing as some late gte's(like my old one) had the seimens ecu.
Either way,i cant believe youve gone for the ?300 route, you could have put a 20SEH in for that, more bhp,but the best thing about bigger engine capacity is the torque.
For instance,a 100 bhp 2ltr would piss all over a 100bhp 1.6.purely because the 2ltr would have shed loads more torque.

20SEH?????

Possibly when accelerating from 30-100mph, but a 2.0 8v will not "piss all over" an equally powerful 1.6. In fact, I think the 2.0 8v from a standing start would have a job keeping up with a 1.6, as the 1.6 will be able to rev quicker and reach it's peak power sooner.

block for block... same.. those are just silly details that any one with a half idea of which end of a hammer to use can sort.

Ask an engine builder if in doubt!
