Piston rings, valve stem seals?
Headgasket?? May be burning water thus white smoke. Its worth checking!
If you are thinking head gasket then check for water in the oil filler cap(white colour) and oil mixed in the coolant expansion tank.(brown thick water)
But i suspect piston rings as you say when you floor it you get loads of smoke.
How many miles has it done.

93000 approx. ive checked under the caps and there is no white or brown shit but ive noticed a small amout of oil seeping out from under the headgaskek and it is just building up on a ledge below the rocker cover block bit!!! soz i dont know wot its called.
Sound like the head gasket is split and letting oil out.
Once you get the head off you will be able to tell (whatever it is you will have to take the head off)

the quilting/heat shield stuff under the bonnet had fallen down abit and blocking part of the k and n air filter, i have fixed this now and would not having enough air made it smoke????

Maybe it made the car run a bit rich and so more smoke produced, but i think the smoke would be black if the mixture was rich, white is oil/water burning, and the heat shield stuff wouldn't have completely blocked off half the K&N unless it stuck to it, wouldn't it just flap about.
Does your oil level seem to be going down quickly.
