After blowing a hole through my old gearbox in my 1.2 carb Mk2, i got a new box from a mate, he sed it came out of his 1.4 luxe when he switched the engine to a SR. It's a 5 speed box.

The first thing i noticed is that i don't get anywhere near as much speed outta the gears. 3rd gear gets about 65, screaming it, and my old box did 80 quite comfortably.

it is much quicker in 1st e.t.c, wheelspins like hell up to about 25 !

i'm thinkin i either got a dodgy box or it's a CR !?

The 1st gear ratios are the same on wide and close ratio boxes. The only proper way to tell is to read the code on the side of the box. It's really hard to find unless someone points it out to you.
With my CR with 4.18 final drive: 60mph=3000rpm in 5th gear.

60MPH = 3000RPM in 5th with CR box and 3.94 final, not 4.18. It's more like 3200rpm with 4.18. (and 3500 with 4.53).

Aye, same as mine! :D Wish I had 4.18 though! seems that the gearbox in question proabbly is a CR gearbox - could try getting a different final to make it rev a bit lower... 3.74 I think is the lowest?
