new alloys

hi all before i bite off more than i can chew how much work will offset 40 (17 inch alloys be to squeeze under my mk1's arches)

Will i get away with shaving the lips of the arches away?

i know i asked an offset question before but i dont wanna end up with a hefty bill

my cars got a 40 mm drop to

well i got a mk1 with gsi alloys on, gunna put my 15's on soon (6.5" wide 45 offset) lowered 60 i think it shud be, grinded the lip away on the back arch, so that shud be alright, gotta do the front aswell, i shud just get away with it.
17's not sure, but saying that i'v seen loads of cars lowered with 17's. wat width are they?

ive got 15" gsi's at the mo with 40 drop, no scrubbage at all, but ive got my heart set on these wheel They are gorgeous
