I've been lookin on ebay and seen hundreds of these +20 BHP MOD chips goin for about ?5 each, they are meant to trick your ECU into thinking the air is cold therefore releasing more petrol resulting in more power. Do these actually work :?:

NO

why do you think things like DTA, Motec, Autronic cost ????? if it was as easy as a 12pence resisitor? lol

Mine have just arrived i bought 3 for ?4, DO NOT BUY THEM they are simply resistors if they give an increase in power i will tell you what ohmn they are so you can get some for about 2p each from the local DIY Shop. They are a CON

I knew a resistor would not affect anything but when it said chip just out of curiosity i bought one.

I have been running a customer of mine in a std rallycross championship for last few months.- car is a 106xsi.

The engine have to remain std.. so being the honest gent i am, we are playing by the rules.. I got the car on the dyno for 4 days.. I ran it up and it looked fairly lean.. so I richened it up with a sensor tester kit i have (same as your resistor only i can dial it in).. I lost power!.. I lefted the head and fitted another "std" cam and swung the cam timing using a slightly modified std pulley..

All this resulted in a gain of 4bhp... yea pretty crap! but we are playing by the rules and the car is winning..

SO NO, these things dont work!

If I'm correct, that great "chip" works by tricking the ECU into thinking the engine's getting very cold air all the time. So when the air is cold it won't make a difference. When the air isn't cold, ie most of the time, it'll fuck things up. Amazing

most use them to trick the coolant temp sensor.

Engine then runs on cold start cycle.

found these ages ago:
http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&A=0128 (resistance of air temp sensor)
http://www.roadsterperformance.com/tech/acu/applicat.htm (air temp background)
http://members.aol.com/solomiata/CheapHP.html (bit of technical info)

but basically the answear is no and the resistence is 1.5k if i remember right, allthough you could get a variable resistor for cheaper than tose on ebay and then adjust how much power you loose!
