View Full Version : what car for runaround?

im looking for a new car as a runaround and i quite like the idea of a really old car like a viva, in fact i really want one, or some like it. Ive already had a capri, bmw and nova to run a round in and i like my rear wheel drive cars. Just wondering if classic cars are cheap to insure, i no they dont pay tax.

Other option is to get a new corsa/astra and get free insurance. Thing is i dont like new cars they dont have any character just not sure what to do.

dont get a new car, lose far too much money on em

thought about a carlton gsi 3000!?

Philsutton
08-05-04, 06:06 PM
i no i will lose money on them but i will save so much on free insurance. and yes i have thought about a carlton GSI but 1. i wouldnt be safe in it and 2. i'd get raped on insurance.

Actually i would like a Mk 2 escort, i love them only they dont sell cheap.

how would you save so much on free insurance?!
youd maybe save a grand on insurance and lose about 6grand in 3 years

im paying about 2 grand for the 1.4sr which is standard.

i think you'll find classic insurance isnt free. but its heavily discounted.

and for classic tax it must have been registerd pre 1975 (as far as im aware)

Philsutton
08-05-04, 06:24 PM
yeah nice discount sounds good to me, and i want a really old car anyway.

classic insurance is cheap cause it doesnt use any ncb its just a weird kind of policy

you normally have to be 21+ or 25+ for it tho

mk2 rs2000 escort was ?330 for me to insure for example

Philsutton
08-05-04, 06:32 PM
yes and i shall use those picnic tables to there full advantage. I think old cars have so much more character than new ones, i think i'll have to go get some quotes first though.

get a stage 1 kitted 1275 or 1380 mini, bundle of fun!

can get yer classic insurance and own a super car for its era and ever since...

Philsutton
08-05-04, 08:13 PM
thing about minis, is the same as a mk 2 esocrt really they tend to keep their value well and still sell for quite a lot of money.
Group 20 f**k thats as high as it gets, could always go back to a capri. It was unreliable no power, but a hell of a lot of fun in the wet.

lots of sideways action

1 guy I know tuned his anglia right up and rolled it going up a hill lol and another used to keep a handful of cement bags in the back in a vain attempt to get some weight over the back wheels lol

Get a twin cam sierra. fairly cheap, parts a plenty in scrappys, and you'll have plenty of arse winking moments in it in the wet

its >1972 aprox.
both my 1975 vivas i had to pay tax on. vivas are ace; well i like em anyway ive had so many good memories in 'em my first billings, classic car shows, jumbles etc etc the looks @ cruises people thinkin i was running a V8 or something.. trouble is even in summer are a pain in the arse to own; loadsa niggles, will spend a lot of time off the road; they're just so old now. but a laffs a plenty. i will own some more vivas. 1256's are slow so i might try 1600, 1800 or even 2300 next. can pick vivas up for nothing now. they litterally are giving them away; 'save from the scrapper'
