View Full Version : 1.8 tuning and intake options
Hi all,
I have a 1.8 just ready to go in to my new shell and was wondering what sort of power should I expect and what modifications to the intake can I do? (apart from time it up and tune the carb)
I have the usual crap and spare filters, tubing etc. lying around.
It's a 1.8 from a cav MK1 i beleive (not 100%)
Varajet II carb system (manual choke conv.)
1.2 box (so I was told, not checked it yet)
Also if anyone can give me a chassis no. from a car that should have one of these engines as std so I can get parts! Local Vaux are f***in useles!!
Thanks all
Just the usual things really matey, twin carbs, a nice cam and a 4 branch should see a few horses!
Are you still popping over on Sat?
Yep,
I am trying to get a van as I need to cut a roof off!
If possible I would like to cut it about a foot down each pillar.

P.S. I'll just stick with the std block, carb, cam and exhaust but jam a filter on somehow.

Ive found a good few horse in past just by careful setup on the rollers.
I do every customers engine now on the dyno so i know its perfect.

I think the 38 or 40 dgas weber carb is a common upgrade for the varajet. think a guy in my area has a 1.8 manta with that done. i'll ask him. there's plenty around in scrappy's too.

the dgas is for a 3.0L engine and has the chokes oopening together ,
the dgav is the 2.0L carb from the pinto and is the one to go for.
Or, a customer of mine is selling a brand new twinchoke 32/34dmtl replacement for the 2e3

32/34 isn't really big enough for 1800.

Balls...
I build F2 engines and they give a solid 160bhp on the dyno running a twinchoke. And they are slightly over 2.0L

yes but 32/34 are too small a choke sizes for a 1.8.
need more like 36/38 or even 40.

in order to say such a statement you need to know that its the choke that is restricting high lift flow, ( ie you need a flowbench) which it isnt in this case..
airflow is related to the power an engine makes regardless of the size of it.. Ive built 1700cc hotrods using a pair of 48s which need 8300rpm to make 180odd hp... yet std 2.0L PINTOS need 40s on 33mm chokes etc... you see the point.
A std 1800 doent have the airflow to need bigger chokes period. And if you dont agree I'll send you the flowbench figures.

dont worry about snowface, he normally argue's or gives false information by the knowledge of what he has been told or has read. We have had a few times like this before regarding other matters where he argued the toss against actual experience and hands on knowledge vrs wives tales etc.

while i might give out a small bit of inaccurate information on here, i also give out a lot of accurate stuff that helps people. Its all in good heart.
Until that is someone (Hmmm?) comes along and starts swearing and F**king all over the place.
