Hello, i've got a 1992 J reg MK2 Nova 1.2....

I've allways been under the impression that it's a 1.2 SPi.

I was reading about installing a digidash i'm about to buy and it whittles on about the 1.2 SPi having an ECU. My car has no ECU box by the Suspension Strut !? does this mean it aint an SPi ?

Cheers

My 1.2i ECU was in the passenger footwell, tucked up behind the dash

Think the easiest way to tell is, if theres is a manual choke then its a Carb,
just a blank in its place then its SPi as the ecu does it for you :)

they'll be an ECU in the passenger footwell up behind the parcel shelf

on the bulkhead is a socket, lots more wires going to the carb area, take off the airfilter housing then you'll be able to see

on top of the air box where it is fixed i think the spi only has to bolts holding it on where as the carb has 3, i think thats what i noticed on mine

well, there arn't many wires going to the Carb area....

My airbox has 3 bolts !

And i have a manual choke !?

Does this mean i have a Carb instead of Shitty SPi ?!! ?!! My induction kit problems may have come to an end !

yes you have carb, an injection isnt going to have a manual choke

It's a 1.2 LUXE

I think from what i've noticed on listings if the 1.2 LUXE is 1991 it's a carb, if it's a 1992 it's an SPi

not sure wether mines a 1991 or 1992 .....

If it is a carb then i can go get an induction kit lol, been pissin around for ages trying to find a cheapish SPi kit !

they started using the spi in 1990 (i had a 1.4spi mk1 saloon registered in 1990) but obviously they would have had stacks of the old engines to use up so wouldve kept using them - there are 1992 carbed cars around like u say

does the end of the cam housing have a fuel pump on it?

if it does - carb

if the pipes go straight to the back of the bay - not via a pump - its injection as the pump is in the tank

why did vauxhall call all the novas different things but with same features?

for example

theres the L, GL, Base, Spin, Merit, Luxe, Trip, Fling, etc, all of which have similer engines in all, 1.0carb, 1.2carb, 1.2i, and, allof which range between the mk1 and mk2!

theres no defining them!

also, of which, they range between a mk1 2door hatch, mk1 4 door hatch, mk1 saloon, mk2 2 door hatch, mk2 4 door hatch and mk2 saloon!

the level of trim defines the "model letter" not the engine

Just becasue ur car is 1992 doesn't make it a SPI, mines a 1992 1.4 carb nova.

Not all have the same features. Basically Vaux would release limited or "special editions" (Fling, Sting, Spin, Diamond, Antibes etc) with the odd coloured bit here or SR bit there. Just to make them different from stock models and give reason to maybe charge a bit extra and shift a few more cars.
