Rev counter

i have an aftermarket rev counter (0-8000rpm). i have connected it as the instructions say, ie ignition live, earth, illumination, and coil. it starts off fine and the needle moves smoothly, but after about 5-10 mins of drivin the needle sticks sumwhere between 2500 and 3000 rpm. when i press the clutch it drops to 1000ish rpm. its connected to the bottom right pin on the coil. any1 know whats happening and how to fix it? mk1, 1.2 carb

either bad earth or shite dial... probly the latter

like he said check the earth( and all connections!!) if its ok take the dial back and get it swapped.
