if you are an absolute novice with matters like this i would say you'd be best to take it to a body shop to have it done.

A working vent is better than a stuck on fake one... obviously because if you're gonna have one it might as well be functional.

As Andy said, take it to a bodyshop. If you want to start to learn how to do things like this, start on something smaller and something more basic. A good idea would be to take a piece of wood, drill a couple of holes in it (using a large drill bit, or even use a chisel and take big chunks out of it) then, using P38/fibreglass, fill the holes and smooth it down till you have a completley flat surface again. You can then spray it up if you want to practice your spraying.

Trying to fit a bonnet vent and smooth it in is not easy and something that requires time and skill. You can mount the bonnet vent on top of the bonnet without smoothing it in. This may be a better option for you. All you'll need to do to make it a functional vent is to cut out a hole in the bonnet. You don't need to cut a hole the same size as the bonnet vent.

If you just stick the vent on without making it functional, be aware that theres a chance of it being pulled off the car if your driving at high speed, as the wind will get underneath the vent and eventually rip it off the bonnet.

That is the major problem with stick on vents, wind gathers under the vent, pressure builds up and the vent lifts off. And if it is something like an evo/f50 vent, something thats quite large, when it comes off it could be pressed against your windscreen, blinding your view.

1 Major factor of fitting a bonnet vent is that the engine heats up which means the fibreglass and metal on the bonnet expand at different rates so the joint can crack.. the best simple way to fit a vent bent.. e.g Evo 6 or sommat is to cut out the functional section and then trim back the went to where the lines of the vent blend out.. once this is done then u can bond the vent on and then either fibreglass mat or jam (fibreglass paste) the vent on to the bonnet as securely as possible... i've found that bonding the vent really just helps u secure it whilst fibreglassing cos it does fcuk all to hold the vent once finished...

if u've got the money to waste on a spare bonnet, vent and materials then u should have a go... the least u'll gain is some respect for the guys that get paid very little once the bodyshop has took there cut out of labour times charged...

I'm going to be offering a service to fit vents to bonnets at the end of this year now obviously i'll be asking for payment for materials and vents ect b4 ordering them and then i'll take final payment just b4 i send it to u...

Now i'm a panel beater by trade so it'll be good quality however as its common for bonnet vents to crack under the heat i can't guarentee that no cracks will appear but its upto u as no bodyshop will guarantee it either.

All bonnets will have a half decent prime but where ever u get it sprayed will probably flat and re-prime it anyway...

Let me know if anyone is interested for the future... may be able to start special orders early if i only get a few... let me anyway
