View Full Version : 2.0 engine types???????????
I have seen lots of 2.0 engine conversions done in Novas, but what is the difference between the different 2.0 engines. Like i have seen redtop(is that basically because the engine has a red top?), LET(seen them used with intercoolers), 2.0 16v, 2.0 8v, c20xe.
Basically why do people go for a certain engine, aren't they near enough similar because they are all 2.0. do they have different tuning potentials etc..
And am i right in thinking that you can get the right engine for a conversion from Astra 2.0, cavalier sri2.0, cavalier gsi2000,calibra 2.0 16v etc.
Can you put up some pictures of the different types if possible,
thanks

astra 2l 16v ,cav gsi, calibre 2l 16v, all the same
the 2.8v is the sri
they call it the redtop because when the conversion u have to paint your roof red  jk nah its cos the rocker cover is red
the diference between the 16v and the 8v is the cams the 16v has 2 lines of cams making it bigger.
So you just bolt in any 2.0 engine you like, theres no particular difference between them?
Is the 20XE a Calibra engine and what is a LET engine.
How much do people normally pay for the complete engine(ecu/loom etc), and how much for it to be fitted????
Cheers for your help

i think u'll find that the c20xe is the red top (16v) and i know that the let is a 2.0ltr 16v turbo lump

for a red top don't pay more than ?500 and for a let newhere from?1k-?2k
or just go cheap and buy an astra mk1 gte 1800 engine modify it to fcuk and you get the same bhp as an xe (but a little less torqe but that saves ya front from spinning so much)

yep thats an option too bobby! lol

wonder where u got that idea from?????
:P :P :P
C20 LET - 2.016v Turbo - found in Calibra Turbo, Cav Turbo etc. As mentioned before, these are top whack about ?1-2k and push almost 200bhp
C20 XE - 2.0 16v - Dual OHC found in Calibra 16v, Cavalier GSi, Cavalier SRi, Astra GTE. Look to pay around ?3-600. Gives out around 150bhp for the Red Top engines (pre-96) and afaik a little less for the later ecotec engines
C20 NE - 2.0 8v - Single OHC found in various Cavaliers, Calibra 8v, various Astras. Cheapest 2 litre option, you ought to get these for ?1-300. Output around 130bhp.[/list]
Do most people get the engines straight form a donor car, because i have seen MOT failures for Calibra 16v go on Ebay for about 200-300 quid, so basically you just buy a knackered (body wise) car and then nick the engine..
How much do garages normally charge to do a 2.0 conversion, providing you have bought the engine/loom/ecu etc, mounting kit etc. And then need the engine way strengthened.I read something about the mount being different in 1Land so harder to fit. So ho much into say,an SR??
Cheers for the help guys.
yep, an MOT fail would be perfect (so long as the engine is sound). Bearing in mind you'll probably have to tow it home. Also, with a donor car, you can strip all the bits you need (e.g. fuel pumps), and as its still in the car you'll be able to see then engine run.

Modifying it to Fukc will cost more than buying the valver in the first place though.
the 2.0 8v is 115bhp standard unless you find the rarish 130bhp version found in the Cav Sri 130.
This may sound obvious but is the insurance on a 2.0 8v cheaper than on a 2.0 16v????

i can not see the difference in usurance but the 8v are cheap as fuck i got mine for very very cheap .
Most of the time it'll depend what car it comes from, but generally an 8v will be cheaper than a 16v. Places that just do a dodgy 5% extra for "engine mods" thing (*cough* LV *cough*) probably won't have a difference in price
That is why LV are good for engine conversions, if they are only gonna add 5% to the premium then its worth it.
I have seen 2.0 8v go for like ?100, complete with loom/ecu etc.
Whereas 2.0 16v are like ?300 complete,
so that is why if though there must be extra insurance cost as the performances are quite different.
well for companies that do *proper* insurance lol they'll probably do it as if the subject car is the same as the donor car... i.e. if you put a cavalier GSi engine in a nova 1.2, they'll charge you as if you were driving the cavalier GSi. So in that respect having an 8v would be cheaper, as all the 8v cars are in lower insurance groups.
So as well as saving money on the engine you'll be saving money on the insurance. Possibly around ?2-500, which you can then put back into performance mods for the engine (bearing in mind that will affect the insurance...)

the 8v will be generally cheaper than 16v (well it does seem obvious as you are getting less engine).
1800 8v out of astra GTE is an option (that not many people take though) but like others have said 'modding it to f uck' would cost more than just say getting an XE in the first place.
Cheers for all the help guys,
thanks :D :D :D
