Right then, scrub the 16v brakes - no chance of getting them in by next Saturday so how much effort is it to change standard brake discs? I can have cross drilled and grooved ones here in a couple of days so that'll do me nicely!
Can it undertaken as a DIY task?

That's good - basically what I wanted to know! so no bleeding or anything needed? Pads I can do but I've never changed discs...

Got a Haynes, but it's generally pretty useless. Even after I;ve read it several ties I'm usually no nearer to getting what I want done. Anyway, I've found what's causing the horrible noises anyway - Passenger Side Front Bearing! still doesn't explain the random movement of the brake pedal....
Don't have to change anything now - it's all gonna get done by a garage coz I cant be arsed changing the bearing myself, got soaked today fitting a very bad fitting OMP roll cage.
