offset is the measurement of how far the centre of the wheel (the face that bolts up against your hub) is from the centre of the wheel.

offset is the difference in distance between the centrline of the wheel and where the hub meets it. On a nova et49 offset it means the hub goes over the centreline of the wheel by 49mm. That's why if you get wheels on a lower offset, like et38, they stick out more (the hub is closer to the centreline of the wheel making it stick out)
