View Full Version : Ticking/Clattering Engine !?

I got a little bit stupid before and got 90mph outta 3rd in my 1.2.

When i stopped , the engine started making a very loud clattery tick noise at a regularpattern, same as engine speed.

When i put my foot down on the gas the sound got faster and louder.

Any ideas wot i've just done ?

noise went about 5 mins later !

it sounded as if it were coming from the engine head or the cam belt !?

My 1.2 used too do that after a good thrashing i just topped it up wif oil let it kool down then i was away again good as new.

probably a lifter has got stuck with u revving it to 7k

It is lack of oil to the top end.

The lifter went dry for a second and caused it to stick.

Check oil levels.

Does it affect performance when it taps? It should do if it is the lifters.

I have done this and replaced lifters now 3 times, they really don't like revving above 7 do they! Still you can't control ur self in certain situations!

its only 7k which aint much higher than the GTE revlimit anyways

im sure the 1.2's dizzy stopped it revving past 6.8-7k anyway? so prolly wasnt quite 90 more like 80-85

My hatch is usually pretty happy to get up to around 75-80mph (indicated around 85) in third and i've never had any problems. The saloon would struggle to get over 60 in third tho :lol:

funny really considering they're the same engine & gearbox (1.2 4speed)

it well could be an oil related problem, my oil is low but it's atill within safe. ragging it round a a roundabout and oil light some times flicks on.

90 in 3rd, it goes quite nicely, someone told me their salooon did it so i tried it. hmm...

don't really usually drive like that, it's quite happy at 70 in 3rd, even 80 is alrite !

i frequently get 90mph in 3rd in mine with no trouble, i no thats at 7000 as it hits the limiter then :D

carb'd nova's (i.e. 1.2 in question) don't have rev limiters, so u can accelerate till ur engine goes pop (if ur stupid enough to).

Also what gearbox u got makes a diff on speed obv. So peeps saying they do 3rd gear - 85mph could have a higher geared box.
