after having a 1.2 (carb) for a while i'm looking to swap my engine for a bigger one. Whittled it down to either a 1.3 or 1.4 SR engine (mainly because of money, time and the be arsed factor), but which would be the best?

Originally i was thinking of the 1.4 with my 1.2 head and some T40s, but my mate martin reckons i should go for a 1.3 on T40s instead as its more tuneable. Anybody care to share any thoughts on this?!?

if ur keeping ur head from 1200 then deff go for 1.4.

1.4 and 1.3 blocks are exactly the same apart from cylinder capacity, as is the 1200.

I found insuring my 1.4 was cheap as chips. 1.4 is definitely best.

Well i'm 21 with 4yrs ncb on the hatch with HIC, so i'm hoping there won't be that much difference in insurance costs

Sounds like maxpaine has the F10 gearboxed version of the 1.4. The F13 CR version like mine is way faster than a 1.3. Everybody I encounter keeps going o nabout how slow the 1.4 is compared to the 1.3 - they soon change their minds after being in mine.

gotta be the 1400, i used to have a 13sr and my mate in his 1.4 pug 306 and mate with a 1.4 clio used to JUST beat me, i then got a 14 sr and i could beat them no probs. not a great difference between the 13sr and 14sr, but enough!!!

Ok, looks like the 1.4 wins then lol

Next question: Anyone know what cars I can get it from? I'm assuming it came in Astras as well? And also what gearbox would be best (at the moment i've got a standard 1.2 4 speed box).

Also, if i get an engine from a scrappy, how much should i be looking to pay for it?

make sure u get the cam out of the 1.4 and put it in ur 1.2 head cause that will make quite a noticable diff in itself. (prob need new folowers also but its well worth it).

insurance groups go out the window when u start mixing and matching a car really. Ur 1.2 doesn't have the same body as a 1400 sr so u won't be paying the same as a 1.4 sr.

Give LV a call.

You want the F13 gearbox from a 1.4SR or 1.4 with C 14NZ engine (thats the 1.4i isn't it?). Whichever Astra has a 14NV engine is the one you want!

Don't bother if it's an F10 gearbox though, or if it's the F13 from an SRi or GTE/GSi, not as quick as the 1.4SR 1.

1.4 with 1.2 head using 1.4 cam. While the head is apart, make sure you use new followers. Replace as much as you can afford to. Make sure you get the head skimmed aswell.
