If I was to get a new head for my 1.4SR would you recommend getting new valves? or what can I have done that will clean them up abit if that is too expensive?
would you recommend doing anything else to improve performance/efficiency while the head is off?

put a camshaft in it!! and get the head skimmed, gas flowed while it is off.

 u can do alot but it all depends on money eh

give the head a minor skim to clean it up and gain a tiny bit more CR.

acid bathe the head and valves to clean them, you can have the valves sand blasted, but you must be carefull lol

also have the top of the head checked for level, as ive heard that the top can warp a bit too, which will make the cam carrier twist and so on.

prehaps have a bit of porting done etc

How much do you think it would cost to get the head skimmed etc...

and what kind of gains are you looking at?

minmal gains on a standard engine, and on a bit lairyer engine still only minor gains. but if you have a cam such as an AST2 then you need to get the CR higher to compensate for the cam timing.

skim shouldnt cost more than 30 notes

some good suggestions so far guys...thanks.
cambridge mate, how much would you expect to pay for the things that you have highlighted?
am tempted to put a different cam in broos3 something like cambridge suggested (AST2) but just can't afford that type of ??? at the moment tbh!
so by the sounds of it I might aswel just keep existing valves as they can be cleaned up a bit.
how much are new valves likely to cost about ?70?

its only usually the exhaust valve that need replacing as they take the brunt of combustion, to clean em use a wire brush head on a drill and clamp the valve in a vice with suitable padding to not damage the stem.

once all cleaned up you can check for pitting on the contact surfaces withe seats. if not too bad they can be ground out with grinding paste and patience, or use a drill. check the haynes bible it goes through this process.

skimming will cost around ?30, they may even clean up the head for ya like they did myXE one.

mmm...may think about that...see how the funds are first tho. and I don't really know of anywhere to go to get head skimmed etc? could do with one of those Drememl things by the sounds of it too.

guys, I have heard of Blydenstein before and heard that they are good... can you get blydenstein heads for a 1.4SR?

Cambridge what was that about CR and Valve Timing? I'm starting to get incredibly annoyed with the running of my car due to the phenomenal compression ratio it has (1300 Head), thinking of getting an extra head gasket to drop it down a bit, but if it will prove useful in the future then I may keep it!

Drop it down??? :?

What kind of pressure is it running?
