hi folks, i dont know what to do.

i am rapidly running out of cash, patience & time

i am at college in the 2nd year of my mechanical engineering course and i havent applied to uni, i dont know what i am going to do once i leave.
my tax is up at the end of this month and i need 2 new tyres and my bank account consists of ?10...... i earn about 55 quid a week a a barman.
i am bored of my nova and want a change, i am looking at cav TD but cant find nice ones and cavs seem expensive to mod - WHAT AM I GOING TO DO??????

i need some help please folks  :(

You could always work for a year or two and go to uni later? Even if its just temping at various places.... Whilst all your mates are away studying and being broke you'll be earning nicely. And employers seem to love experience over qualifications! For the tyres, swap 'em front and back, and go easy for a while, in a couple of weeks you'll have the money for some new. And the tax you could do for six months, that's just over a weeks wages for you.

Chin up lad, it could be worse.... you could be driving a saxo lol ;)

i suppose it could be worse but i wouldn't drive a saxo for christs sake, i aint dying!
what can i do about the car tho me ode, its getting boring so i am thinking convert to van and do some other mods but dont know what to do, any ideas

You might have trouble on insuring a van, they're classified as commercial vehicles so I think that causes problems. If you're gettiing bored of the car, try doing a few cheap mods, paint some bits, take a trawl up the scrapyards etc when u next got a couple of quid spare.

Cavs can be a bit expensive to mod, there don't seem to be as many bits around as for novas and suchlike, but they can be pretty cheap to buy. If you want a diesel how about a nova TD? Usually a bit cheaper than a cav diesel.

fook thats a mornings pay lmao.

I'd say, take a year out, dont cock about like i did, get a "relevenat" job to where you think you want to go in a career. then go to uni, for mech engineering i recomend Sheffield or Newcastle (from what ive heard)

Dont give up, you have an unusual car and thats hard with novas, just get some weekend work.

why say how crap his job/earnings are? it's just a part-time job, and he might only work a handfull of hours for that.

get some re-moulds or something if you can't afford new tyres.

Whilst all your mates are away studying and being broke you'll be earning nicely.

there's no point putting your education on hold just to earn a bit of money to have a nicer car. yes you may have a nicer car and more money than your mates, BUT that will only be AT THE MOMENT and will only last for so long. they will start climbing the careeer ladder and will overtake you pretty quickly after graduating (assuming they do - and when they DO find work aftre that, as it can take ages. Ask Alex!) whilst your earnings potential will not increase, and if so then not significantly, unless you have some skills & qualifications behind you. Though experience is important.

Ignore having a nice car and etc now, that shit is just short-term. If you put things on hold for the sake of a car, you'll find that whilst you may be the envy of your peers at the moment, they will end up getting better paid jobs and better cars further on down the line, whilst you will probably still be driving around in the same Cav TD you want now.

Pu up with a shit car and little money, and concentrate on doing as well as you can now. The time may seem to drag, but it is all but a small drop in the ocean on a grander scale of things.

And advice of getting another bar job/more work, may not be good either. Yes yuo'd earn more money, but you need to find a balance between having a bit of disposable cash, time to relax so you dont burn out in your studies, and time to actually spend on studying.

Boring now, yes, but one day down the line you may wish you were able to make the choices you can now, but you will have a LOT of other things to take into consideration then, that don't even exist now.

sound advice from marty... I wasn't saying to put your education on hold, i was just saying that getting experience in the workplace can be just as useful as having a few years at uni under your belt (well in the eyes of an employer anyway), so you shouldn't conentrate on that as a sole aim.

Dont give up on the nova just yet.

I'm a student atm, and im getting bored at having no money to spend on my car..i hate driving about seeing other modded nova's that i would LOVE to have, or make mine look like, but if i dont continue with the courses im doing, or buy a different cheaper car, i know i'd regret it in the long run, cause when the time does come when i have loads of money, i can then think about buying loads of stuff for it.

I'd rather be bored with the car atm, than have a good looking car, no money and no education behind me.

Marty speaks sense

i can only have a part time job at the moment but instead of uni i am going into work based learning after this college year. it will give me a HNC in the field of work i eventually choose and i can convert it into a a Beng with another year after. then along comes the supra! (i hope)

just managing to get the nova done, tyre coming today, tried to tax it but forgot my insurance certificate and MOT, cant find MOT either.

working on a couple of new mods to keep me happy with the car, e.g. sealed forced air induction..........

prehaps youre taking a bit for granted? just having A car whilst studying is tough. a novas gotta be one of the best cars to own in your position; what else would fit the bill that you cud afford?

ydg27
01-03-04, 02:40 PM
true, but once you have owned you want more. i am capable but just have lack of funds, but things are looking up

see my avatar? thats what i had when i was studying; best car i've owned for 5hits and giggles.
1975 vauxhall viva, a nova would have been cheaper too cos it need alsorts over the 12 months i owned it; but nothing major.

right a semi proper response from me

I have a crappy (although ammusingly popular with the regs) 1.2 that i simply dont care about. its been reliable (appart from brakes, but that was solved years ago). granted its not the nicest, nor fastest but she does her job.

1) fairly good on the fuel
2)Come april she will have got me 5 Years NCB (worth more than anything in my book)
3)got me everywhere i needed to go

now im looking to replace it with something, again, "practical" in a odd kind of way lol a motorway monster.

I was skinter than a skint thing at uni, but hell i had fun, just about ran a car and managed to pass (some how lol)

as its been mentioned job hunting is a proper full time job, which a lot of us on here never realised. I may have a "well" paying job right now, but thats because ive had to make a fair few sacrafises to be here. BUT there is a steeper money curve with a qualification.

Never sell yourself short by having a very short term plan that will obv screw the future some way.

are there any decent employment agencies around your area? I was in much the same boat as you m8, earnt about ?55 a week and was always skint, I had a bit of spare time so though why not use it to earn some extra cash, so I signed up and now I am hardly ever skint :D
