their not ecotec engines i.e. more powerful due to less stringent emmisions laws when they were made.
I think thats right anyway. I know they like 15 ponies less or something.

the guy said it came out of a V reg astra. is this the red top version??
dont think so, that being a late one is ecotec, ya can get them out of early cav GSi's e.g. j or k reg

Its more than likely the ecotec version.

ct is running 200bhp on a redtop
im not 100% sure on the ecotec changes but i'd imagine theres not much mechanical difference between the engines - probably mostl of the differences are in the ecu software so 180bhp on carbs wouldnt be too bad and estimation i guess
i'd like to have seen him get that engine thru the MOT :|

about 30 bhp?
so 180-185
Exactly. Mine was approx 185 at the flywheel.
This was on a fully re-built engine.
I have been to a rr day where all of the standard XE motors were running around 136 - 140bhp at the flywheel. This shows that there are a lot of engines with high miles out there lacking a bit of power.....so watch out.

he's puttin it through the MOT today, so we'll see.
If it aint got an ECU wont it in theory be the same as a Redtop on carbs? or are the enjines different in some way?
wel he has been down to santa pod in it and managed to get 14.5secs down the strip.
how would you go about insuring a car like this? would they class it to be the same as an astra 16v?
cheers
the ecotec heads are different to allow more hippy friendly emissions.
