Right, if i were to put a 1.3sr engine into a 1.2 nova (before u say it Ian! this isn't a technical forum Q !! lol :D) and then put the 1.2 rocker cover onto the SR engine...would u be able to tell (without very close inspection) that it was a different engine?

The thing is, i'm wanting to get a shit*y 1.2 for about -?400, then put a 1.3sr engine in it, and leave it looking standard (to give a few people a shock at the lights:D) what happens at an MOT??? if I go in with a 1.3sr engine with a 1.2 rocker cover on it, do i have to tell them it's a 1.3? or would they not check? would they just check the brakes and everything work?

To sum it up I want to keep it quiet i'm doing the transplant, and i don't want things going tits up when it goes for an MOT! (cos if it says 1.3 engine on an MOT, it would land me in shit :()

OK So what your saying is you'd like to get caught with no insurance again.

Come on ged learn ya lesson mate.

By all means do internal mods to an engine that can't be recognised e.g. head and cam. But trying to get away witha different engine is asking for trouble.

I've been quoted ?1000 TPFT from CIS (that's on a mk1 1.2 worth ?400 with a standard engine) with 6 points. Do you rekon I should just get a totally standard 1.2 and put a 1.3sr engine in it and then leave it? then tell the insurance company? (a totally standard looking 1.2 nova with a 1.3 engine in it wont cost a lot more to insure will it? anyone?)

I thought both 1.2 and 1.3SR were both same insurance grouping? 5? maybe I'm wrong. When I had a 1.2 and got a quote to change, my premium didn't change, stayed the same.

your premium didn't change when u rang them up and said u were gonna swap your engine from a 1.2 to a 1.3sr?...1.2's are group 3 i think, and a 1.3sr is group 5-7

I suppose if i did an engine transplant on a standard looking 1.2 your premium wouldn't rocket cos after all, it still looks like a 1.2

na, not an engine transplant. A different car, I wanted to know what the price difference was on insurance - mine was grp 5 for a 1.2 Merit, ?82 for 3 months, and when I asked about them insring me 4 a SR, they said it didn't change! According to Max Power, they R both grp5.

Answer to Geds Q...

Its not the rocker cover you need to change, the engine number is stamped onto the head, and it's this you tell the engine size from, so you would need to change the 1.3's head with the 1.2 one, this is howecer supposed to give you a power increase due to raised compression.

the rocker covers are no different and the engine number is on the block if you really want to do it you could fit 1.3 crank and rods and rehone your 1.2 block and it will make it a 1.4 with 1.2 engine number
1.2i = grp 3-4
1.2 = grp 4
1.3sr = grp 4-5
p.s. you wont be shocking me at the lights 2.0 16v badged as a 1.2i :D

BTW Ste, one of my mates has got an Escort estate (a white one, totally standard looking except turbo alloys and it's got a 1.3 Popular badge on the back!) with an RS Turbo engine pushing more than 250bhp!! proven!!! I think leaving your 1.2i badge on is class m8...all credit to ya...the fun you'll have in that will be untrue :D

as far as i know they both look the same (seen both, couldn't tell) apart from the engine number. think you could get away with it as i blew my 1.3sr block (after 3 months of passing my test x-( ) so could only fit another 1.3 in it. obviosly it had a diffreent engine number to the one on all the documents but nothing was said at the mot so i think they dont check it. ask around but definately worth a blag if u can get away with it.

can u get some old models GL? L or somin that has 1.3 engines? if u tell the insurance company it was a engine from one of those models if they are in a low group u'll only have 2 pay insurance at that level!!

I thought i got stung on the insurance they want ?1000 for a 1.3 sr, shit. I'm 20 with 11 points and it cost me an extra 300 to insure my 1 4sr with the 2.0 engine in it. But then i havent told you what i pay now
