W ord of advice mate, don't do it. Don't want to shatter no dreams or any thing but ive done it for a few years now and to sum it up its, long hours, poor pay if you aint selling and you get treated like something people stood in! But if you stil want to get in to sales then try handing in some cv's to garages like vauxhall playing on your "intrests" in vauxhall etc, make sure you include a covering letter saying how youve always wanted to do it and want a career change!

My mate got a job as a car salesman. He thought he'd really get into it, but hated every minute. If you have a conscience you wont last a day. My mate was amazed at how much they had to cover up when selling a car to people.

You'll probably get stereotyped as an obnoxious, rude, stuck-up salesman, but if you still want to get into it, then I suggest getting some experience within the sales industry for starters. Try a clothing shop to learn how to approach customers, they'll take on people with little or no experience, car companies ususally require some experience in the sales industry. You'll need to show determination, be self motivated, well presented, have good comunication (bulls**t ;)) skills, confidence, be initative, and have plenty of common sense. Being able to judge people as soon as they come into the showroom is handy. You'll learn how to approach different people to gain thier trust. A drivers license might come in handy too ;)

There just a few things of the top of my head. Good luck if you still want to get into it. I spent 3 years working in the retail industry and actually really enjoyed it. There wasn't as much pressure as the car industry, but each day brought new challenges.

Cheers for the advice guys. Iv had 3 IT jobs now and theyve all seem to have been same shit different day. Im not really interested in computers and would much rather prefer to work with cars in someway. I dont wanna be a mechanic, so i could only think of sales or design??

the main reason why i wanted to get into sales was that every single showroom iv been into, i know i could sell the cars a dam site better than every salsmen in there.

the thing is at the mo, iv got such an IT orientated CV that i couldnt just go into a vauxhall dealers and hand it in. I guess i would need to do what geordi said and write out a covering letter explaining my current situation? or would it be better (as jim said) to get 6 months experience selling summin else??

and he wasnt driving a rusty escort lol

as for the sales. as someone said if you have a concience dont do it.
i'm selling trainers at the moment ffs and the amount of lies you have to tell people to buy the fucking things is unreal. i'm sure youd have to lie evn more with a twenty grand car lol

OK gents, i've read all the posts on this and i'm just throwing in my ten penneth worth.

I have an IT background (PC Maintenance) and hold a BSc Electronic and Electrical engineering. I am 30 yrs old (soon 31) and i have been with my partner for 8 years and our son is nearly 6. We are getting married next year, and i have what many people would describe as a "comfortable" lifestyle. I earned ?28,000 last year in retail sales. I sell leather furniture.

People DO talk to you like shit, you DO work long hours, you DO have people on your back if your figures are shit, you DO work weekends, YOU do work while 8 some nights.......

I started the job in Nov 2000 with NO experience. I had never even been in a furniture shop! I took the job to use as a stepping stone towards a final goal of selling cars..........

If you wanna do cars, you can earn this sort of money if you are reasonably successful, but I would advise you to get into furniture. It's a good stepping stone into "hard sell" which is what car sales is, and (as I well know) the car dealerships won't even interview you unless you have solid sales background!

You'll know after the first week if you wanna do it! I've never looked back!

If you want any further advice, email me RICKMARLAND@IC24.NET

And i am still looking for an opening in "medium prestige" marque EG audi/vw

i prefer munching on it.

Dave - sales is a job that's possible to get into without previous experience. If you can sell yourself to the employer, you can sell whatever they want you to. Or something like that. Just convince them that you're passionate about the product/service. Or fake it.

Alternatively, follow the ''hello, i would like to apply for this position....do you have insurance?...i hope so...because if you don't...there WILL be a fire on monday..." and the "...i know where you live..." approach. Or possibly not.
