Away to pick up my gearbox that i was having rebuilt to night. It's a close ratio but i've changed the final drive from 3.74 to 4.18 so will i notice a big difference?

yup
probably rev out in top at about 110
youll lose approx 5% top end speed, and shorten a 1-4 mile run by approx 0.3 of a second.
you loose 13mph (revving to 6800rpm) but will gain on acceleration. unless you have too much torque then you might loose some due to wheelspin

sholudn't lose much on wheel spin got a 90% diff fitted
mine spins both wheels in the dry when i change to second unless its realy grippy surface. and thats with a 3.74FD
you should be ok with a 4.18 unless its turbo'd

i noticed a hell of a difference.
i went from some really long ratio cavalier box, to a close ratio F13 with a 4.18 fitted.
the difference was tremendous, and people will turn there nose up at that but having driven with both of them from experience i can certainly say it was a good improvement. im not intrested in doing 100 MPH+ on the motorway, so for it to rev a little more at the top end and lose power dont bother me.
aceleration is a lot smoother and i find itll pull in any gear now.
i can be doing 20 and drive around in fifth :D
it is GREAT fun to sit at 65-70 on the motorway, just on the powerband of my cam :D cos as itll pull in any gear, even in fifth, if you see someone you dont like or need to pull out and boot it doing say 70 MPH itll keep going and going and going! and it picks up really well.
