View Full Version : Moving Electric Window Switches

I want to move my electric switches to become part of a panel of rally 'stuff' (switches, digi clock etc) so is it possible to pull the actual switches out individually and refit them somewhere?

Anyone know what type of switch they are so I can wire an additional passenger side 1 up?

go to your local electronics shop(ie. maplins) and ask for a double pole double throw non-locking toggle switch its just a basic switch u push up for one thing and down for another and its off when you dont touch it, ull need it to be rated at at least 10amps aswell tho, if you dont like that switch then ask them to show you anything they have similer there sure to have a few options

rally cars normaly have manual windows

Actually Ste, ROAD RALLY cars have electric wondows wherever possible coz it's a pain in the ass winding down windows at every control! especially when you're trying to get away from the control as quickly as possible and you've got to make sure you don't lose your place on the map or drop the timecards out the window....

DPDT switch, great. Rather have a non locking Rocker Switch , won't stab you if you accidentally hit it then!
All The Maplin stuff arrived today - new switches for Hazard lights, spotlaps, interior striplamp, accessory connector etc.... Oh, and a nice sheet of Aluminium for making the panel with!

why would the hazard switch be a problem? for wot he's got in mind i guess the round push button switch from a mk2 astra would fit in neatly with his design. non locking 3 way rocker switches would be fine as well needs to be double pole for the wiring and double through for the up and down and off movements, the poles on the back wil be the middle two + and - the top 2 poles wire to the window up wires and the bottom to down(you prob know this but just thought id post it) only thing is can any1 post how the windows work as if i remember right theres 5 wires for each window, so 2 woul be live/earth and then i assume one wire switches between the remaning 2 wires for up and down? if this is the case then you will need to splice this single wire to both poles, all in all this is an easy project and post up some pics when ur finished

Whoa, wots that thing? :o

I've actually just got a locking push switch (illuminated 1) for the hazards (gonna be cheap and paint a white traingle on it!) Never actually gave it any thought as to how you actually wire it in! lol! Might fork out for an Astra 1 now!

Basically all my mods involve are ditching the window switches from the centre console, putting an Aluminium panel down ythe middle covering where the stereo/cigarrette lighter would be and mounting everything in it. Window switches at the top either side of my Digi clock (salvaged from my Mazda 121 Rally Car) under that will be the Spotlamp, striplight and hazard switches and under that will be a jack socket for the Poti and a DC power socket to connect my drill/solderiing iron etc for when I'm fidlling with the car.

Hazrad switch and heater grilles are coming out and the stereo's going up there (for college purposes!)

Need to do something with the shelf under the glovebox to hold the clipboard with the timecards on it...

As for window wiring, I honsetly don't know - I know theres a how-to on www.nova-land.com about it, I'm pretty sure there was a wiring explanation on there.

It's a Bowyer powered 1600 rally car for sale at www.motorsportdirect.com for ?7,950

Stage Rallying I hope, that wouldnt ever get past a road rally scruitineer!

ok - anybody know how I can rewire this damn hazard switch - just looked in the haynes and confused the hell outta myself with the wiring diagram!

Yes Denny, Martin Bowyer built Bigruss's engine!

AND yes it is a proper  stage rallying car.. :D

Real rally car eh....

look at Car 52 - my old rally car on the 2003 James Trenholme Rally (I was navigating so I know all about needing power windows!) - Thats a proper rally car LOL! Would have been the top sub 1400 car if it wasnt for that Corsa!

cc1 - now THAT is a real Rally car: Escort Mk2 RS2000 GENUINE as well! :P

out of interest why would a road rally scruitineer have a problem with ste's pics?

surely if its suitable for stage rallying it must be ok for nav rallies?

First 1 wouldn't pass because of the aftermarket pedals believe it or not! (to do with safety apparantly....).

Second 1 would be ok I think, although if that tube going from the shift lever into the bulkead is anything to do with the transmission it will fail.

Road Rallying has much tighter rules than stage rallying because it takes place on public roads which aren't closed. Stage Rallying is on Public land where anything goes.

Most stage rally car's wouldn't be allowed to compete in road rallies. If you're going to do both you have to build it to road rally rules as they'll be accepted for Stage Rallying then as well, but it won't necessarily work the other way round.

nova rally have you got any pics or a maplin part number for the switch you bought to use as a hazard light switch?

cheers

Part Number N04AR. Needs quite a lot of circuitry to replicate the wiring of the nova hazard switch though. (I'll work 1 out for you if you want...)

gear selector has to be standard.... rear seat has to be retained.. etc etc

same sort of thing as grp a and grp n.... grp n isn't far off road rally spec

Yeh that kinda thing - single colour paintwork, no stickers, spnosors stuff like that...

only asked bout switch as i thought the wiring would be quite interesting, looks quite straight forward really just need to use a few relays and it'll work fine, oh you prob no but you'll need some resisters for the led in the switch otherwise it will blow

yeh I'm using a LM317 Voltage Regulator for the LED. I'm going to wire it all up in my college electronics class - so everything at hand!

4PCO relay? (4-pole changeover) Can't really make much sense of the haynes wiring diagrams - wish they'd have used a normal circuit diagram!

Alan

right my reading of the wiring diagram is this,

nova hazard swithc(mk2 '92 wiring)
pin 1 = black - switched live
pin 3 = black/green - right indicator
pin 4 = red - 12v+
pin 6 = black/white - left indicator
pin 7 = blue - flasher unit
pin 8 = brown - ground
pin 9 = black/white/green - direction indicator switch

when the switch is turned on pins 3,6,7,9 go live which makes the flasher unit work the indicators and the tell tale on the dash flash

so you need to connect the relay to the output of the switch and connect the remaining poles to the pins that go live above and then you need an earth on there aswell, other issue is switched live to pin 7 as if you connected this to the permenant live then the hazards would permenently flash regardless of the switch bein on or off

when u get this done can you list the wiring you used up here as i hink this may be useful to people in the future

yeh I'll attempt a kind of how to thing as the Mk2 hazard switch is possibly the worst looking 1 I've ever seen, in fact the whole design of Nova dash is pretty bad.

I think I'm just going to get a breadboard, a load of switches and see what I can do! Should be able to make something happen!
