It depends on whether you are going to do the welding yourself or pay someone to weld it for you.
And also you need to be good at smoothing filler as it's quite a large area to sand down after and if you don't get it spot on it will look shite once painted.
I done my tailgate ages ago and then discovered the blanking panels
Presonally id go for the panel coz theres hardly any filler involved in smoothing it in.
Hope that helps

U will need to remove everything from the tailgate such as the wiper, badges, lock, grab handle, glass,
and then clean the tailgate using white spirit or sum sort of cleaning chemical to ensure that the tailgate is spotless
You will proberably get an ahdesive with the panel such as stickoflex or evostick, use this to bond (Glue) the pannel to the bottom half of the tail gate.
After you have done this you will need to smooth the two upper edges (the bits either side of the rear windscreen which bulge out from the tailgate) into the tailgate using filler.
Cost:
Pannel ?45
Filler ?5 depending on size of tub, only a small tu needed
Wet & dry assorted grades about ?3
Thats the option i would use.
Or if your going to weld it up and smooth it in then a welder would charge anything from ?30 to ?50
U will also need to buy quite alot of filler, which will eventually crack anyway!
This is fairly difficult to do but the choice is yours m8
Hope that helps 8)
personally i dont like those blanking panels, a few people on here seem to have had a few problems fitting them, needed cutting etc, plus ull either need to cover the join with a MK1 wrap-round spoiler or smooth it in, they also dont look completely flat, the ones iv seen seem to bulge out slightly :|
welded flush tailgate is the best way in my opinion, bodyshop will charge around 100quid to do it
iv got a welded type flushed boot for sale, needs a slight bit of tidying and a few more coats of primer, dont want much for it, PM me if ur intrested

Thats basically what you have to do, but you will have to use a small amount of filler to smooth the two points into the tailgate so that it doesnt look like youv just stuck a piece of fibregalss or grp plastic over the tailgate.
Think ill try one of those panels since the tailgate i welded and filled cracked in a few places
i used one of the panels, was a bit of mucking about but nothing to bad, might be able to see it on the back of my pics,

if u get the panel from supernovas all u get is a bit of sharp edged fibreglass n fuck all to fit it with, it is a fairly good fit tho.i drilled holes and pop riveted it on then smoothed the screws down n filled over em, also put this bonding shit on as well then just filled round the edges and smoothed in the bits down the side of the window, also put sum expanding foam into the numberplate recess to stop the panel bendin as much.

well ti's up2 u but i think them panels are sh1t ive seen them with big buldges every where and if you got subs in the back! Oh well you will be filling it every weekend after youve had your subs on!.. :?
the tailgate i welded and filled cracked in a few places
If this is done proper IT WON'T CRACK.
the last one i did i re-inforced the back of the steel panel i made up. welded this onto the bootlid. fibreglassed over that and skimmed up and painted it.
it was on a fully rosejointed valver (extremely bumpy on the road) and never cracked

and now its still on the same car which now is a 180bhp tarmac rally car and surprise surprise its still not cracked

So i'd recommend the welding in a panel way. much stronger in the long run when done right

^^^^^^what he said, i think mine was on another car for over a year and its still tip top :D
I'm surprised no ones tried a sheet of acrylic/perspex across the entire rear lower section - all you need to so is properly seal it with sickaflex (?) and then smooth an angle at the top edge. also then round the corners. you may need to reinforce the centre section with some foam/or better still foam cavity wall styrene.
will be solid - easier than welding - wont crack (unless you smack it with a hammer!) and a damn site easier than filler
worth a shot - ?8 gets you a sheet of perspex from B&Q! the foams not than expensive (just use polystyrene) - if you cant find sickaflex use a thin spread of epoxy resin.
as for the bottom edge, you just need to make a template for the shape and cut some perspex - then join it with resin or similar (epoxy resin)
ade
thats not a bad idea ade when the be arsed factor kicks in i may give that ago!
