I know how well you like these posts so here is another

I fitted a new exhaust manifold yesterday (direct replacement janspeed 4 branch) but now when running, the engine makes a ticking/tapping noise. It increases in speed and volume as the revs go up. It is coming from the dizzy side of the engine.

Any ideas what it could be? It made no sounds before the swap, but i can't see how a manifold would cause anything like this. I would normally take it off and have a proper look, but the be arsed factor is an issue.

how bad is it? did you use new gaskets?

my magnex 4 branch does exactly the same but its the actualy manifold making the noise, nothing leaking

it is the exhaust manifold gasket. And if it sounds like it is coming from the dizzy end then it will be on cylinder number 4.

Did you use a new gasket for the new manifold? If you did, did you do it to the correct torque?

I have tapping noises from mine too.

After the engine is allowed to rev to about 7000rpm it will start to tap really loud, then I switch off and after 5 min or so and it will run fine. It is OK until I rev up high, then it starts.

It may be the same problem as yours but not as bad as it only taps when given pig.

I have been told it is rockers or the hydraulic things in the head sticking.

Or check the bolts on manifold, you do have a gasket on there?

its the manifold gasket - itll get louder and louder and you will see a significant drop in power eventually it'll start to blow.

The "tapping" is actually gas under pressure being forced between the agsket and black causing the metal gasket to vibrate (i think).

Get it changed - ?10 odd for a new gasket - sealent (i think) - and if you can get the nuts off a 20 min job (if you cant then all day and some servere swearing/knuckle grinding!)

yeah, i was a impatient git and couldn't wait for the dealers to open up again after xmas and i didn't know when they would be open (they are funny near me) I thought i could get away with using the same one. Will get a new gastket asap.

Those bolts are a bitch ade :D . loads of wd40 and 2 hours later = all bolts off, but most rounded off. Luckily they dont cost much to replace.

Oi impatient git! thats yer prob
Try and get hold of some exhaust paste too, itll help with the seal! and use new studs n nuts! vaux do them cheap enough!

i have to change my gasket. Anyone know if you can change the gasket ona 2.0 nova turbo without removing the whole engine? thee doesn't seem to be much room to pull the manifold away from the engine with the front crosmember in the way

My gsi seems to be blowing badly and i think its escaping from between the downpipes and my magnex.

There is a stainless gasket in there and the bolts on the screws are well tight.

THere is loads of black soot around the join area, will this be losing me power as well as makin a horrible noise?

Have you got the springs on those bolts?
