window washer wiring problem

i bought a pair of window washer lights

fitting ok
then i came to see if they work and they didnt
so i thought i would try on another 12v battery they worked
try again on the nova car battery didnt work
so then i took the conection of the battery so the car wasnt connected and tried again and they worked
can any tell me a way of getting around this

its a sign from god to leave them off!

novas are equipped with taste & style filters (only kidding, honest)
the w/w lights must have a separate +ve connection that should be spliced into the sidelight circuit. there is probably also a separate earth connection which needs to be fitted.
if they are L.E.D. lights, wiring them in backwards will not work......

and do u know why it needs a seperate earth connection
