if it is a carb model, have a look at the choke cable where it connects to the carb.
maybe get it tuned/serviced, the diagnostic gear will tell you what is wrong

if its a pierburg autochoke ,in this weather it can take a long time to warm up and come completely off choke, hence using more fuel.
partially covering the rad will help get the heat up quicker / keep heat in

covering the rad will make no difference, the engine only sends water through the rad when it gets hot enough to open the thermo valve!

correct dicko but if that water in the rad is cold then it cools the engine down as soon as the thermostat opens , that water goes thru the autochoke and hence it takes longer to FULLY warm up also you tend to run the heater which is also cooling the system down. believe me it does , my thermostat is brand new and without the board over grill then the temp gauge is contstantly moving up and down for all of my 15mile journey to work, with the board fitted the temp stays at pretty much 1/3 and its much nicer to drive.

mine has a gsi size rad....

and the temp guage will go up and down for a 200mile jurney

that would drive me mad
mine was constantly idleing at like 1000 then upto 1300 back to 1000 then stall then 1300, stall , 1000 you get the picture during a 15 mile trip
