my dad has been trying to talk me into buying a new car from a proper garage on finance. There is things going wrong with my nova left right and centre and i dont know if it will hack the winter.
I totally love it to bits but dont want to spend loads of money on putting it right.
Thing is i dont like any of the new cars in the garages these days.it would have to be a 306 which technically they dont make any more also it would have to be a gti or somehting which would cost a bomb in pertol and would have to be free insurance.
I am really stuck as i ill need to get this sorted quick as after xmas i am moving out and cant afford to be putting the nova right all the time.

Please give me you opinions as i am in a right mess

 I like your nova - But from what you have said you might be better off knowing you have a newer car.

Getting a car on finance is gonna cost you at least 170 per month for the next five years. Keeping your nova on the road shouldn't cost anything like that, once something is fixed it is fixed for a while (generally speaking).

If you are planning on moving into a place of your own after xmas i would recommend that you keep the nova for as long as you can because you may find it to be a real struggle keeping up all the expense of living alone, and keeping car finance, and higher fuel and insurance bills going.

The best thing to do is to get a loan anyway instead of finance, that way its not secured on the car and if you dont keep up the payments you dont lose the car to the garage you bought it from - added to that, the interest rates on car finance are usually stuuupid compared to a decent bank loan.

Your choice, but in your situation i would keep the nova, get it fixed for the winter and it'll be fine.

i agree with andy, keep the car. take it someone you know and get a quote. atleast you'll know how much it'll cost.
just cause it's a new car dont mean it wont go wrong either.
atleast once the car is fixed, it's paid. when you first move in, you'll soon find those hidden bills creep up on you. after a while you've moved in. look at your finances and decide then.

i know i really love the nova but its just thing after thing and when i am getting it fixed there is something else wrong with it i thought my wheels were fallin off yesterday so got keith to check them when i took the wheel brace out the boot my boot was soaking wet so i know there is a hole somewhere now!
I dont want to be paying loads of money out when it goes wrong every month as i would rather get a new car and know that i am not going to have much bother with it well really speaking it wont be a new car if i get a 306 as they dont make them any more but i would be shopping about for deals on insurance warrenty etc and my dad said for me to get a loan too instead of the finance.
I just really dont know what to do the nova looks the business but handles like a bag of shit but a new car would look reasonable would be a new project and be under warrenty

but thats the thing there is so many different thing wrong with it i keep finding new ones, gonna need new alloys for a start as the shacking is getting really bad. And on a new car i would get warrenty

Well not modding it that much just wheels etc for now

Dpnova
28-10-03, 10:12 AM
I think even wheels void it (correct me if im wrong) but a freind of mines warenty was void on his fiesta because he modded it, it might be different with different dealers :)

srs1
28-10-03, 10:13 AM
sounds like you have made your mind up already.
i'd try and run the car till its death now, or atleast till next mot. you should have found something by then.
dont get the car from a garage. i tried buying a corsa a year ago. lad i know told when it was going into garage for sale. i was told garage gave him 1k px for new one. i was there when he handed it over. asked the dealer what he wanted. ?1900, i laughed. ?900 extra for pulling up on the forecourt, that is some price increase.

linzTDI
28-10-03, 10:17 AM
i havent made my mind up as i have just got the nova to look the way i want and i would have to put that in as the deposit.

Might Have a look round in garages at the weeked just browsing maybe go for a few test drives with no intentions of buying one yet unless something really strikes my eye and i think yes i like that better than my nova

dave.gsi
28-10-03, 10:20 AM
most stipulate that any modifications even tiny things like door pins will void the warrenty so modding a new car is a definate no no if you want to keep the warrenty in shape.

i agree with andy, keep the nova.

although you may need new things every other week it doesnt have to be expensive. take your new wheels you need, you can pick up a set of gsi rims with good tyres for about ?60. second hand parts are plentiful for the nova so when something breaks go the scrapyard and replace it.

new cars just dont have the character of old cars, stick with the nova

wisewood

Linz - i know roughly what you are earning at the moment and i would say dont do it until you are living on your own and know how much you have.

linzTDI
28-10-03, 10:24 AM
but thats the thing i dont want my car to be off the road all the time as i wont be able to get to work etc.

Look this is how it is

I love my nova it looks class but is a heap of shit really and its a diesel and having trouble strating in the morning.

A new car wouldnt break the bank as i already pay 100 quid per month insurance But dont like many newish cars

Dpnova
28-10-03, 10:25 AM
I dont know how much your earning, but i agree you should move out first and then see how much you are left woth each month. The last thing you want is to be skint all the time :)

linzTDI

learn how to sort the nova your self...

i had new cars when i was younger... cost more to run/service etc than my current shitbag nova has... cost ?75.. still going strong after 2 years

srs1
28-10-03, 10:27 AM
you'll only be digging yourself into a deeper debt.
when does mot run out?

linzTDI
28-10-03, 10:28 AM
july or august i think i know its sometime around when i passed my test. tax runns out in jan tho

dave.gsi
28-10-03, 10:31 AM
run it till the mot's up

then by that time you'll be sorted out financially whereby you can buy a new nova (gsi?) and transfer all your new bodykit etc over

srs1
28-10-03, 10:32 AM
6 months tax (chrimbo prezzy of the olds)
so thats plenty of time to get yourself on your feet, when you move out.

linzTDI
28-10-03, 10:33 AM
nah i wouldnt pay the insurance on a gsi when i am paying ?100 per month for this 1.5td.
Would have to wait till i was 25

Insurance wont be cheap on a new car

wisewood
28-10-03, 10:35 AM
seems to me you have already made you mind up linz.

Here is my suggestion...
Go to the bank, get a 3k bank loan over the shortest time span you can afford to pay it back over... go out and get yourself a decent car for under three thousand pounds, you'd be able to get something like an S or T plate corsa for that money and you arent gonna have many rotting problems with it and the engine setup is still close enough to the nova that most people on here will be able to help you out if anything does start going wrong.

Thing is though - two years ago i bought my N plate clio hoping to have no further troubles through winter etc and found that it isnt very good in the cold weather (although it heats up quick) and it costs me twice the amound of the old nova on insurance. You'll be surprised by how much difference the age of the car makes to your insurance linz - you could end up paying out almost 200 per month on a newer car.

linzTDI
28-10-03, 10:39 AM
look i totally havent made my mind up i am just seriously considering it as i am really going to kill myslef in that car and i mean that.
I have explained that i was gonna get a new car i would have free insurance then when thats up i will be a year older so it will come down a bit anyways.

To make my car deicent like a new car I would need a full engine service a steering rack new wheels (not shitty ones) new doors new back wheel arches and a full re spray break conversion. And to be honest I am not willing to pay for all that done

Jim
28-10-03, 10:41 AM
it would have to be a gti or somehting which would cost a bomb in pertol and would have to be free insurance.

You'll never get a Gti with free insurance.

Getting a car on finance is gonna cost you at least 170 per month for the next five years.

Not true. My girlfriend and I pay ?130/month for 3 years on a brand new Renault Clio. It's only a 1.2 but its such an underestimated car. 15" Alloys, CD player, Sports trim. Fantastic car for the money.

Insurance wont be cheap on a new car

Depending on Linz's amount of NCB, she could be paying around ?40/month for the Clio mentioned above.

If you're looking to move out, then ideally you want to be saving to put a deposit down on a property, unless you're renting? Either way you're going to need to save some money in order to pay for those bits that you'll need when you first move into a new property.

It's up to you, but these are my thoughts on the matter.

Jim

another thing to find out is whether your insurance company resets your ncb if you swap the car half way through the year...

the bottom line is the nova will be cheaper than running a newer car, even if there is more hassle

also theres absolitely no guarantee a newer car wont have problems, and it would be more difficult/costly to sort out if it did develop problems

linzTDI
28-10-03, 11:18 AM
thats why you get free warrenty!

28-10-03, 11:20 AM
the smart car is actually very very safe in a crash - the bits that are usually black/silver arent just that shape for show - its actually a safety cell they call the Tridion Frame. Super strong re-enforcement to keep the occupants of the car safe.

The engine is mounted at the back - which in a rear collision could shoot forward and crush the driver and passenger but not in this car - its mounted ona rail and if an impact occurs it simply slides forward and underneath the people in the car.

They are very well thought out - and if you can get someone to take the limiter off them they are a bit quick too... seen one go past me on the M62 doing about 100mph.

linzTDI

You dont understand how much s**t i have off my dad at home - so your dad hates you

he has offered keith cash to move me out. - your dad loves keith

Plus want my own house where i can have mates over - till you realise you have to tidy up afterwards

and not have to go back and forth to keiths all the time - how far is it? not far

and his mam and dad are rediculus - or are they senceable? there the most ancient people ever and are so strickt with him wont let him have a tatoo or anything

she dont want him to move out - maybe she doesn't think he can afford to?
She thinks he hates her if he moves out
she asked me to move there instead - well at least she likes you more than ur dad?
i dont think so no one is good enough for her son especially when she meet my parents

silly cow i dont think i could last a week in that house - well she is ur future mother in law... u better get used to her!!Gonna get a big dog so she wont come round as she dont like big dogs

shame you arent a couple of years older linz... could have got a dirt cheap mortgage like i did when i was 20.

My flat only cost me 27k - and there is one slightly smaller, but still two bedrooms on the next road along up for sale at the moment for 50k. Quite a tidy profit, shame i dont wanna sell it at the moment or i oculd make a mint on it.

its a very northern thing to do, i know a few people around here that do the same thing. i never understood it myself - but each to their own. Much better to just have a big pot of money and live from it imho. except for the kids of course - i reckon kids should pay a bit when living with parents once they are working, but dont think it should be spent - i would save it and give it em back to help em settle in once they do move into a place of their own. Much better idea.

I'd be nackered if i was 2 move out! i couldnt afford a flat in cardiff! Its mental the prices have shot right up!
Id have 2 live a good 5-10 miles out of cardiff itself!

Linz, I'm paying ?120! if u had a mortgage itll be alot more close to double!! plus electric, water, gas, tv licence, and its the smaller stuff that adds up!!!!!

mine is costing me ?165 per month for the mortgage. f*ck all really.

locky is right though, anyone who has their own place will tell you its the smaller things that make the biggest difference - insurance and stuff is the worst in my opinion... buildings, contents and accidental damage etc. GGGRRRR!!!

i'm back again!
things sound tough there linz, sorry about that.
i have been buying stuff now for three years. i'm ready to actually save for a place now. i know it's gonna be a council house, but there are so many hidden costs. my sis all in pays ?550 a month on a 50k mortgage.
but thats everything. plus theres her car/insurance petrol road tax tyres and wear and tear.
if you can hack it longer then do it and save. the worst case scenario is to leave on bad terms and fall flat on your face.
good luck!
