View Full Version : Im not liking my new Limited Slip Diff!!!!!!!!!

Just had my new Quaife Torque biasing Differential fitted about 1 hour ago.
Fack me its good when accelerating round a round about! Proplem is its a bit fierce when you back off the gas :(
I was entering a left hand 90 degree bend just before a roundabout at about 50mph, when I backed off the gas...........BIG MISTAKE, The backend flew out and I slid across the tarmac sideways and hit the centre kerb of the roundabout..........
End result being a Buckled Speedline rim, heavily bent front arch (where the wheel hit it), a door that won't open properally, and a punctured tyre... Thats all I can see at the moment as its too dark to look at the damage futher.
Moral of the story is........
ALWAYS TAKE IT EASY WHEN YOU'VE GOT A NEW MOD, JUST INCASE THE CAR HANDLES DIFFERENTLY IN ANY WAY.
Something I forgot. :(

LSD's only work when You are on the power. The idea is to use them to pull the car around the corner, You will be amazed how fast You can go around corners if You keep your foot down hard! If You totally lift off in the bend You are in trouble.
Find a quiet piece of twisty road somewhere and try it out, gradually build up Your speed/confidence and You will shock yourself how quick You can go through the bends. Power steering helps too!!
Power steering helps too!!
Lol - Not just ANY power steering hey Russ! - Super special electric power steering!

Sorry to hear the news mate, hope the damage isnt to bad. The not shutting doesnt sound to good, any creases in the roof skin?
Ive only driven 2 cars with diffs in, 1 being andys turbo and it scared the hell out of me at first! Took some getting used to.
If you need a spare alessio i have one with a tire on you can borrow, not that it makes any difference though

cant see how the diff has caused that.
i notice the diff pulling the wheel straight especially on corners!
U can feel the diff working over time when ur giving it hard boot ect ect
but never effected handleing into bends or had owt to do with rear end tho! Hmmm
My Quaife ATB diff pulls me into corners - scares me 5hitless every time!!!

Yeah, it must of been the diff, because I was accelerating into the corner hard, then I suddenly thought I wasn't going to make it so I backed off......
Sounds like I should of keep my foot down and gone for it.
Nevermind,
I've got friday off work so I'll access the damage then. Hopefully if im lucky i'll just need a new rim and front arch. Looks like the door only won't open because of the wing catching it.
Cheers for your offer Karl. If my wheels knackered any chance of buying the rim off you? I'll give you a good price obviously, but if you want to keep it no worries.
Sorry to hear about that.
If you don't like it I'll buy it off you :D

i thought the rule with a diff was that you didn't back off just before or in the corner? .... did you basicly take the corner with engine braking in full force?
You don't lift off in a corner full stop, LSD or no LSD.
MC
this has happened to me before aswell, but in the wet, car was fine til i let off the gas thinking i had beter slow down, soon as i did the backend shot out due to the front end slowing down and taking weight off back end.
my mate did it in his 106gti doing 80 on a bend and he was in hospital for 2 months

MC
was just about to write this too.
when you lift off round a corner you transfer weight to the front wheels, giving them more grip, and taking grip/weight away from the rear.
now you can use this weight transfer to help you , for example you can lift off a little if your front drifts wide, and you can apply throttle if the rear starts to slide, but you should never lift of unless the front starts to slide...and even then, you should never lift off completely. if you do that, you deserve to crash!!!
Truth is, we shouldn't be driving like this on public roads anyway

taking my foot of the pedal on a corner is the reason i wrote off my first nova. And the reason my brother wrote off his corsa!
I will NEVER do it again..
Keith
Like you said Neil should have sussed it out first. But at least the damage iusnt as bad as first thought.
If Karl dosent want to sell his spare wheel we have a couple of spares.

Neil, i will need the new rim myself as i have buckled one of mine. You can still get full sets and singles though. Said they were going to stop making them but they seem to of carried on.
I think the "last batch" tatic was just Wheelbase wanting to flog them off.

I always thought rulez of FWD was that no matter what u do... DON'T let off the gaz when the front end understeers otherwise it snaps on u...
Mine does it and it aint even got an LSD... think engine must have done some seriously quick engine braking m8

not exactly. the rule is to not lift of COMPLETELY. if you're understeering and running out of road, you've gotta do somethin. best thing is to slightly lift (i.e. release the pedal just a fraction) as this will give the front a little more grip, but you need to be very gentle (as you should with any of the controls anyway). it's violent adjustments of throttle that unsettle the car and put you into the nearest tree. you can get away with lifting if you're smooth enough about it.
the throttle can be used to steer the car when on the limit. you should never need armful's of steering lock.
the key to being a fast race driver is all down to weight transfer. you have to figure it out in your head, once you've done this and can put the right course of action into any 'moment' you will be fast and should never crash.
the other important part of fast driving is observation..you need to look as far ahead as you possibly can and use your periferal vision to be accurate.

The others have already beat me to it, but it's not the diff that caused it to spin, but the way you drove the car.
It's just a case of lift-off oversteer. The diff probably helped you build more speed up tho, so may have made it more severe than had you been driving it without one.
Bad luck nonetherless mate. And a very good moral too.

Took it all apart today to assess the damage,
The wishbone is badly bent, Wheel i've been told is repairable, the front strut has moved up and has seperated from 2 seams, Inner arch has creased slighty and has moved up hence folding the arch up slighty. And something else that I didn't notice till later is that there is a big dent appeared in the roof, obviously from the chassis flexing or twisting......ASS!!!
I have smacked the strut back into place, Pinched a wishbone of my other Nova shell and have swopped the bush over. Also I have taken the underseal off the inner arch and preped it ready for welding.
So figures crossed, if I can get a mate to bring his mig welder over tomorrow, it might be rolling again by Monday......All be it on Steel front rims until I get mine repaired.
Stupid me, should off been more careful

She's back together and rolling again. Cost me ?70 to have the strut switch welded up and two plates welded over the gaps where it had come apart from the seams. Measured it all and its seems fairly alright. Drove it to work and it heavily pulls to one side (Probabley Tracking I know). Im taking it to have the tracking and camber checked tonight, hopefully the camber isn't too bad although you can visually see its got some negative.
Looks like I'll be able to make Santa Pod this sunday (2nd Nov) after all. Anyone want to come and watch it fall apart half way up the strip??? :D

30-10-03, 05:18 PM
i am supposed to be going to santa pod but its not looking good at the moment as i got pulled the police who think my car is "excessivly loud" an needs to be tested to see if it actually is excessivly loud.
Neil if there is a dent on the roof the chassis leg on this side is obviously gone up or moved slighty in some direction. this car should be put up on a jig instead of bolting bits back on. it will be better in the long run.
Rick Draper

Jigging a nova aint worth it anymore, a dint in the roof means the shell is scrap, just bodge it m8 use it for summer then reshell it into that mint silver GSI shell. Rick
I think you are all missing the point, I think the public should be warned, LSD is dangerous, and another poor soul has fallen from the straight and narrow because of it.
Lol Mowgli is 'triping'...lol

RUBBISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
L.S.D's are not dangerous at all, over the years they have been std items in many production cars, RS Turbo's, Cosworth's, 2.8i capri's, etc etc......
The same Quaie diff is std kit in a Focus RS, how on earth can it be dangerous????? :o
I think he was reffering to the drug LSD...........

The chassis leg was slighty bent..........
Oh well, the cars been p*ssing me off for a while now. I think I'll soon be srappying the shell and relocating the Engine (as Rick said) into a Silver GSi Shell i have.
But before that im determined to get some runs in at santa Pod, but looking at this weather I don't think we're going to go. :(
Anybody want a red GTE.......Great condition...... cough cough.... covered in Dents and rotting away. ?10 without the engine ?3000 with... he he

Ouch.. poor nova..
I recon you should run it this year, then shell into the GSI. BUT!, keep the GSI styling completely original, as i think it was a beaut the way it was :D
Keith
I thought you meant a little dent, that's huge :o

After a sizable crash like Neil has had a bit dent apearing in the roof means his shell is bent. Rick
mmmm....mine aren't exactly the same but still. they are smaller and more in the centre....do you think this could be the same mate or is it hard to say?
thanks

Yeah got them to. All my Nova's have had those dents, Its where the chassis flex's under extreme cornering. Nothing to worry about.

Dents in the roof could just be due to kids playing football in the street though!
I know my GTE got at least one that way! graaa
