on a budget its got to be the 20.16 for instant power in a straight line also have to consider uprateing suspention coilovers if the moneys there
depends what cash u have to spend prob do a valver for 700 if u did it yourself and got some second hand coilovers
but im sure for a grand you could get a decent 1.6 8v

i hate questions like this coz evri1 has different opinions and you could make your decision then think its was the wrong 1 completly

Pro's of the gsi

lightweight engine
simple conversion
plenty of tuning options
easily turboed
keeps the novas normal handling
cheaper insurance
cheap to do

cons of gsi
only 100bhp
most are high mileage now
finding one that hasnt had the tits caned out of it

pros of valver
straight 150bhp(as long as its been rebuilt)
easy enuff conversion
plenty of part around

cons of valver
weight and traction problems need addressin
nearly all of them have been caned
expensive to mod
higher insurance

in my personal opinon id go for a turbo 1.6 16v, and why havent you considered the 1.6 16v there avery good engine and lots of tuning options to make 200bhp and more with them?
