I think how the database is structured the post count is an actual attribute in a table, and not a summation of all posts counted. Therefore deleting posts doesn't reduce the post count. When a post is added the figure in the tables field is selected, identified, incremented by 1 and then stored again. I dont think it is a dynamic summation in php everytime as this will take up resources quickly on such a large site.

That is unless admin go straight to the table and edit the post count
