Thought I would start a thread for my Re-Shell after a shunt on the Pendragon Stages in August which folded the rear end. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190122/ad075ac14a588a7fb1d4f13bec433716.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190122/155fcb7e75bd77f1f7907e89305245e0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190122/3e4444a299ccf24fad9986c159c03607.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190122/082601c57e3b0013a4b08a314a14c1a8.jpg

Picked a new Rolling Shell up from Aberdeen in late October, hopefully going for the cage & fabrication work at Protec Motorsport in Feb/March.
A lot cleaner shell which was a 30,000 mile road car until it was turned into a rallycar only 2 events ago. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190122/24294f70f30b9cb04a93495b1b40cccf.jpg

Full Standard X14XE Engine + Complete bottom end with Omega Pistons & Rods going up to Bill Falconer in Scotland this Saturday. Going for his Race engine setup rather than his Clubman setup.

Dropped my engine off at Bill Falconer Engines up in Earlston, Scotland yesterday. That man is a genius with anything to do with Vauxhall 16v engines. Could quite happily wipe the floor with other engine builders out there just with the knowledge he has.

Brief Spec of my Engine getting built:
Omega Pistons & Con Rods
ARP Rod Bolts
Baffled Sumped
Low Temperature Thermostat
Modified Standard Exhaust Manifold With Down Pipe (Proven on the dyno getting more HP over tubular 4-1 manifolds)
Weber 45 Carbs
MBE ECU & Loom
2.0 Ignition Coil
Alternator Lowering Kit With Adjuster And Large Diameter Alloy Pulley
Steel Flywheel For 7 1/4" Clutch
Solid Cambelt Tensioner
Re-Grounded Standard Vauxhall Cams
Double Valve Springs
Bronze Valve Guides
Solid Lifters

Have a look on his Facebook page [emoji1303]

Finally got the Shell around to my lockup, starting to strip everything off ready for the cage and fabrication work at start of March. Surprised at how clean this shell is, only done 2 gravel events since it was turned into a rally car from a 30,000 mile road car! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190213/b846144173f00e4ae6cb3611753934d3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190213/a2bff260f832372d5643832eacc981fe.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190213/d26ea802c23fcde3318317600ce16abf.jpg

Took the shell up to Scott Mcminn Motorsport at Cumnock, Scotland on Sunday morning. Getting the Hockly cage put in and a few fabrication jobs. Should be ready to collect next week.

Also the 1400 engine got put on the Dyno last week at Falconers and just waiting for the phone call to go pick it up. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190311/caaf80036d239bf396df78f06f4ac513.jpg

Yes nice solid shell has saved a lot of time and money.

Picking the engine up which is ready to go from Falconers then mock the engine bay up before it gets blasted. Probably bead blasted hopefully as it’s less aggressive. Then for paint & start the build. Also the painful part of emptying the bank account for all the parts!

How come they didn't blast all the paint off?

They don't tend to blast the large flat panels as the heat can distort them, most flat panels can be bare metalled before paint.

Atleast that's what my painter did as my roof skin wasn't blasted

How come they didn't blast all the paint off?

Asked him just to go around the edge of the panels and not blast the centres as there isn’t much strength in the doors or rear quarters as I didn’t want to distort them. Bodyshop can just sand them down with ease and no damage [emoji1303]

Came up very well the shell, was very surprised only a few pin prick size holes in front valance & Rear Panel

Dropped my F20 Quaife Box off at Angus Lawrie Motorsport at Castle Douglas last week for a strip down & rebuild. Good job I did as the inside of the reverse gear has worn out and damaged the synchro above it. Luckily they are both standard GM parts and hopefully getting parts up to him ASAP.

Also getting a rear F20 gearbox mount fabricated by Angus to allow for the 3rd mounting bolt point.

It’s a Aston Martin Anthracite colour, lovely shine of it.

Can’t wait to see it with the glacier white on the outside.

Bodyshop or on with putting ‘Raptor’ underneath and in the arches today and hopefully start on the outside next week

Few more things added to the car this week. Got the back axle in last night with all new Group A rear dampers & springs. Brand new Kevlar tank guard from Magnum Motorsport finished underneath off nicely. Also painted all my calipers & sliders in high temp black paint and finished them off with high temp lacquer. Put a 120 AMP alternator on the engine aswell which should hopefully be getting put in next week if a metal engine water pipe arrives from being made. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200124/afb86b5a03bc876eb94bc9213149903f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200124/7741ecbfeb2b7c1f6bebeacc4dedd973.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200124/9954aaac2a041da2f88bd1c53f32dc57.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200124/c5fce649af58f20c1887ec73439c909f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200124/437dd77788aa96eeaaf15530f7317c36.jpg

Made a start on the Brake lines today. Quite a fiddly job but I enjoyed doing it, just need to order some more hose for the engine bay. Fuel hose is all connected up now, just need to piece it in when the engine is dropped in. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200125/cbf170817c837f0b92b49e35b65c8d60.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200125/f34496ed0de3e20beb9a357008260e25.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200125/4e13cf4a818d9d3ce1985b1384ecded6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200125/4f99589cbc7cd70fdf7d9f8ea22b5226.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200125/05c4fb02212b9fbcd5f56d5f03d6674e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200125/ba86331126387b2203996e6a1659b858.jpg

Cheers it’s coming on well now. I will be cable tieing them to the bottom of the strut to keep them away from the tyres. The hose I’ve got has a PVC outer liner so I’m not too worried about it rubbing against the strut etc. It’s just going to have to be checked every so often to see if it does mark the hose. Have looked at the idea of spiral wrapping the brake hose that are outside of the car just for added protection. But at the minute it will be seeing how it goes with attaching it to the strut

Cable tie to the strut and rubber hose where it touches the spring cup.

That whole lot all rotates together doesn't it so I can't see it being an issue.

Yeah I thought about just cutting a slit in some rubber hose and putting it over, doesn’t have to be anything special with it being a rally car. Cheers bud [emoji1303]

Looks brilliant Joe! Which rubbers from Ka and Focus did you use?

Focus Mk1 Main Rubber, Focus Mk1 Outer Scraper, Ford KA MK1 inner scraper.

I’m going to be getting a few more sets of these and I’ve got the measurements of what they need cut down too. So if there is enough interest I may start selling them as a kit as they fit bang on. Will only be looking to cover the cost & make a slight bit of money on each set. But will probably be something that I would be happy to do after lockdown if people are interested in here & Facebook.

Good info on the door seals, should definitely help someone doing the same! Dash is mega too, I'd love to have mine properly wired it's chaos behind the dash!

I don't understand the lock stops, any more pics?

Yeah I think it would help a few folk especially seeing a few folk asking the same questions about what rubbers to use all the time. Yeah dash is a proper job, everything done with plugs aswell so everything can be taken out separately.

Only got one other photo of the lock stops. All it is, is a big washer that slides into the inside of the rack. You then just secure it in the rack as best as possible. And all it does is stop you from turning on full lock because the washer is stopping the rack arms from going to its full length in the rack. This then means the Outer CV joints aren’t going to be on full lock aswell and your not doing any damage to the race & bearing in the CV because they can easily pop out when on full power on full lock because of how much stress is on them. Another thing I will be running is a 5mm Plunge spacer that sits between the Shaft & Hub too keep the plunge at the minimum. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200426/7af9f080f33c4e96ef7eca53e5546a3e.jpg

Chucked a seat in tonight and got my position on the seat rails bang on. Rough idea of where I want my steering wheel at as I’m gonna be using a weld in quick release boss because I wouldn’t be able to get out of the car with a standard boss because of the cage and seats. Haven’t had any luck with starter motors. The first starter motor that came on the engine, was worn out and lazy and the original. Had another 2 starters in my spares that I’d got from my old rally car a few years ago and they were also both not working. New one ordered which should be here tomorrow afternoon so we can finally crank the engine over.

New starter motor on and it cranked up no bother. Engine & Spot light loom are finished. Just Front lights & rear lights to start and a interior loom to start which has Fuel pump, Intercom, Fuel Sender, Interior light and Map light.

Bought a 9” Comex suction fan to replace the standard fan. Much neater and plenty of room compared to the old fan. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200505/d82c1e46aabda6c3e688c1b891f600e1.jpg

Looks a totally different car now with the sill guards & mudflaps. Gear linkage is so precise and the throw between gears in minimal, whole car will take some time to get used to.

Take the car down to Tony Law exhausts on Tuesday for a custom system then ready for a MOT next Saturday.

On a serious note, I hate clutch and gearbox related issues, it's such a pain to do anything about, they're on my list of things I hate, up there with genital warts and syphilis.

New clutch looks a good bit of kit, is that a TTV flywheel??

I know hahahha, wish I had the time to put the gearbox in but that’s gonna be my task tomorrow. Yeah well I thought it was gonna be abit of a pain in the arse to get the box out when it was just on axle stands, but it probably only took 30-45 mins. Don’t miss lying on the floor with a F20 on your stomach!!

Well impressed with the clutch, just a recommendation from Bill Falconer when he made the engine for me and it allows me to run a standard release bearing instead of a homemade setup like on the AP.

Flywheel is just from SBD Motorsport, 2.78kg and it’s just a 7.25”/184mm size.

Fly wheel looks a lot like my TTV. Lovely bit of kit, well mine was lovely until a friction plate paddle ate most of it!!!

I did cheat when it came to putting mine back in as I had the use of Ben's ramp, which makes things easier.

Using off the shelf parts is better than having to fabricate one offs, especially for things like clutches as it's such a pain to get to!!

When is your next event??

Yeah I’d never heard of TTV until you said so I went to have a look on the internet and they look exactly the same! I seen the damage from the friction plate on your thread, lucky not to do any more damage. Never seen a plate fracture like that before.

I had a go at trying to get the box in today but definitely need a 2nd pair of hands just to get the box onto my stomach and then a hand with lifting it up. Yeah a ramp is so much easier and transmission jack can save half the hassle.

Yeah your right and I didn’t wanna go away from what Bill had recommended as I think he’s had a few issues with AP clutches on his engines before.

I’m unsure on that, entered into a championship this year but with the virus near enough all the events have been affected. So I think it might be a few local single venue rally’s or rally time trials which I have seen a few advertised.

My thoughts exactly, very lucky it didn’t take the clutch cover with it aswell!

I thought about doing a track day at Cadwell, it’s probably the only circuit that would suit the car with how low geared mine is especially around the mountain section onwards. Maybe not at the back end of the circuit, but it has crossed my mind to do something there as 2 rounds of the Motorsport News Circuit Rally championship are held at cadwell.

Yeah I deffo will, thinking of booking a local karting track for its first proper go out so shall get some in car.

Car might see the road very shortly after having continuous clutch release bearing issues. Should have it all sorted now I have got a boss made up for the bearing by someone from work. Hope to take the car out for a good few miles to check everything is working how it should and then get it tucked away for winter.

Chunky spacer! I can't imagine trying to do events without road shake downs beforehand. REIS are good for competition car insurance.

Yeah it is and fingers crossed it works as I?ve had the box in and out too many times now trying to get the measurements right. Already got it insured with David Auden and they beat Reis by ?200!

Moved into a new workshop a few months ago, much more space and can fit 2 cars in.

Gearbox is going in tonight hopefully for the last time!

Gearbox all back in and the front end all built back up. Just having an issue with the clutch cable. To get the clutch pedal in line with the brake pedal the cable adjustment is as short as it can go. Got a 1 litre clutch cable coming which is 6mm shorter which will probably solve my problem and also swapping the plastic adjuster for a Nut so it?s slightly easier to adjust then having to take the cable off every time etc. Anyone else had this problem before? Thinking it?s because of the race paddle clutch I?m using and how different they are compared to a road car clutch with a longer clutch pedal throw and more of a bite point.

I like the idea of drilling out the clutch nylon and adjusting via a nut. Much easier!

Spoke to someone who has the exact same setup and he said he had to do the exact same, clutch feels bang to be fair. The back zinc nut can come off so might swap it for a washer just to give me a few more threads of adjustment

First fire up to run up to temp for a while. Had to put a fresh set of plugs in as the others had coked up with just being ticking over in the workshop all the time [emoji1787]

Hopefully doing the Pendragon Stages bank holiday weekend in August which is my local event and the event which buggered my old car in 2019!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210503/2d2d329ce359ab7cb7cc7928bda1f1fb.jpg

Nice mate, I've just signed up for the JSS at Cadwell, hopefully this year I'll not break a driveshaft on the sighting laps......

Planning to do the whole series next year, I said that last year but Covid fucked all plans!!

First Rally done with the new car this weekend on Warcop army ranges at the Pendragon stages. 35th Overall & 2nd in 1400 Class.

Good to get to grips with the car, only a few things to sort in service all day. Very lucky to finish as about a mile off the end of the last stage I took a cut abit harder than I should and the shock of the impact snapped the header tank bracket which tore a hole in the tank. Got to the end of the stage and only lost a tiny amount of water.

Thanks mate [emoji1303] it?s took a fair shock on the passenger side, a load of stress marks around the bottom of the strut top behind the header tank. Think if everything wasn?t stitch welded it would be a different story

Who makes the dog box for HHMS??

I?m not sure house, it?s definitely not HHMS themselves. I also got in touch with Satchell/Maxi Motorsport as they do a f20 dog box but it was about ?300-?400 more exspensive than HHMS. They also said that a supplier makes them so was wondering if both companies get them from the same supplier? But unsure who the supplier is! Be good to know as it might be even cheaper
