Am I right in saying later sr clocks will still fit a mk1?
As in later clocks with the white ring in the speedo and rev counter, in a mk1 dashboard with no cutting or anything like that.
I'll have to wire to the coil for rev counter but is there anything else I should know?

The mk2 clocks are different as in they have tabs either side and one at the top which would have to be cut off. Also the plug on the mk2 is a 14 pin as the mk1 is 12 so you would need to cut the mk1 off and wire in the mk2.

Doesnt sound too complicated to do then, Thanks for the info.

The clear dial cover on the Mk2 has a plastic ridge running along the bottom which won't fit the Mk1 dash space, can't remember if this clips off or if it's glued on though

massive ebay pics to show the difference, I know these are both poverty spec dials but shows the shape and the clips

Thats also good to know, cutting those off wont be a problem :)
Its the wiring that Im worried about. Is the mk2 14 pin plug the same wiring as the mk1 12 pin plug just with 2 extra contacts at the bottom?

Does anyone have a diargram for both?

Iam Sure it is. Just connect colour to colour i would of thought might be wrong though lol.

Best bet is to get the plug to match the dials, then chop the plug onto your existing loom - the colours are almost like for like (the only real difference is the indicator colours) but they do move position on the plugs, so jamming a Mk1 plug into Mk2 dials won't work.

The extra 2 pins on the Mk2 are for rev counter and a blank pin. Might be for EML in an injection engine? I don't have a Haynes any more and when I did this I seem to remember only looking at the non-injection looms.

I have a haynes, it was the first thing I bought :)

That will have the pin-out in it?
Edit:
Now I've replied I can see the diagram you posted whereas for some reason wasnt displayed before. Cheers I'll save that for later.
One last question, If I get mk1 clocks as I hope to do, where does the wire from the coil go to on the clocks for the rev counter?

Been a long time since I have messed about with clocks but there should be a spare slot in the plug for the green wire. Biggest problem I found with changing clocks was sometimes with certain clocks the alternator wouldnt charge .

There's a female spade terminal on the back of the rev counter, to the right of the multi plug in this pic:

Thats brilliant thanks Jack.

All I have to do is find a mk1 set of clocks now. :)

Also the clocks I have in the car look more like the 1st set of poverty spec clocks pictured above. I'm going to have to have a look at the back of them and check the wiring as they may already have been chopped and changed for a mk2 plug - this car has had a lot of work and I wouldnt be suprised if its had rev counter clocks before.

I've got a set of 1992 GSI clocks

I'm hoping the plug is the same but I've not had chance to get the clocks out of the car yet so we'll see :)

Any clues as to how I "correct" the mileage?

Take the Speedo out the 6 dials. Use your old Speedo in the 6dials so you keep the correct mileage. The faces are different sizes so you will need to swap them over. Just remove the small screws on the Speedo and use 6 dial face on your Speedo.

Take the clock out, remove the main spindle & turn the numbers to match what you need & push the spindle back in. 5minute job

I think they'll do. They've cleaned up nicely once I got the paper white dials out as they were rubbish, not stuck in correctly and had bubbles and lifts in them.

Happy days :)
