View Full Version : New coilovers or just springs?

I've got lowered springs and unadjustable dampers, and they are abaout as hard as they come. I think the springs are rated at 180lbs if I remember correctly what the garage said - I'll be doing this kind of thing myself when my garage is built rather than taking it somewhere to be looked at.
Would I be better replacing just the springs with similar height but lower rating? Or the whole lot?
I understand how suspension works but have never fiddled with it before so any advice from experience is appreciated.
I've sourced another set of 14" 3 spokes and dont really want this lot buckled too!

180 is very very very low. The reason it's 'hard' is that the dampers are too stiff so it's crashy and feels shite.

Typical spring values are about double what the garage claim is on there

So I take it you'd replace the lot?
I'm not against doing that to be honest. Any recommendations?
I'd like it firm, not wallowy but driveable and not harsh, preserve my alloys :)

Gaz

there is another member who is likely to buy a set too, maybe see if they will do a better price for two sets

I fitted front yellow koni dampers rears were standard with -35mm eibach springs all round. Koni's and springs were used bought for £80 rusty but cleaned them up and painted. They felt so much better than standard no body roll and felt fine over speed bumps. Maybe a set of standard shocks and eibach springs will do you? Or something else second hand. I suppose it depends what you want to spend.

I'll keep that in mind, like I said, its not a racer so just a bit lower than standard and less roll like you say would be fine.

Im looking to keep the height I have as it doesnt look too low and manages to get up the driveway at my mums without scraping, unlike my previous TT so that has to be about right, although I dont know what that height is compared to standard.
What height are the ones you have adjustable to/from?

They seem to be around 60-70mm max drop.

OK, back to this.
Im looking at lots of brands of coilovers.
I take it the cheapest brands are going to be shite. I've seen lots for around £200 (and cheaper) - JOM and various unbranded - not really looking at those.
GAZ and several other brands seem to be up in the £600-£700's which is a little much as I've spent a couple of grand on parts already and I have the cost of a brick garage to consider over the next month or so.
The cheapest gas ones I've seen are in the £400's with Bilstein and AP coming in at what I see to be a reasonable price.

It looks like it could well end up being one of these, unless anyone has any other ideas?
