View Full Version : Headlight problem

My SR is only giving a dim light on the passenger bulb as though there is reduced voltage regardless of dip or main beam.

Everything else electrical works perfectly on it. It is not the bulbs, I swapped them. I have checked all the fuses and tried it with all the relays removed, no difference. I have checked the light switch and wiring which look ok.

I then noticed when I switch the lights on (even side lights) the oil pressure gauge goes backwards a little bit but perhaps it did it before? I have checked the wiring for it (it works as usual otherwise) and removed the instrument cluster, with all the connections off the lights still do the same so it isn't the instrument cluster. Any ideas please?

Thanks

Check all the earths, particularly the gearbox to chassis one.

I will check them all but they should be good and everything else including the voltmeter is fine.

Have you checked the back of the clocks.? The pcb tracks are fragile and can break easily causing electrical problems.

I removed the clocks and checked but also used the lights with the instrument cluster disconnected, still the same. It is weird!

What about the dim/dip relay under the dash. Normally screwed to the map shelf?http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/AsIAAOxywh1TC3Dk/$_1.JPG

Thanks, that's the next thing I was going to check, I won't know what is wrong with it visually but I can check the wires etc as a starting point.

Do they appear on standard mk2 novas?
If so I can swap over to test, I know they are not on my earlier novas.

I have removed the wiring for the relay and there is no difference so it is not that and all earths are good, I couldn't find this type of relay anywhere in the Mk2 or in my mates 1987 merit, strange! I assume the fault is either a broken wire or a faulty switch. I will check the switch tomorrow by swapping with may mates.

In the short term CAN I run with wires from the driver headlamp to the passenger one without damaging anything?

I took a wire, one at a time from the working headlight and changed them, it turned out the brown wire was faulty. I gave up working out in the wiring diagram and took a common sense guess at it being earth. I assume the cable is broken somewhere so just fitted another earth and voila. Thanks for the ideas/help.

Ye brown is earth.....if I remember correctly that is.....
