My 13SB had a new cambelt 4 years ago and the car lay for the last 3 years.

When giving it a thorough service I checked the belt tension, according to Haynes there should only be 6.5mm of movement, there was more so I tightened it. It then hummed fairly loudly. I released it a bit until the humming more or less stopped.

Now it is 8mm of movement, I can turn it 90 degrees easily and more if I try hard. The hum is more or less gone so I assume, Haynes settings are just a bit too tight?

What sort of settings does everyone else use?

Thank you

Always done it by 90 degrees on the longest run of the belt. Was the water pump replaced with the belt? Could that be on its way out if it wasn't changed. Check to see if the belt is flapping alot when running and raving the engine. If not then you'll be ok. Also cam belt intervals is 5 years I think so maybe worth chucking a new one on for what they cost

Deffo sounds like the pump if it's been sat a while etc

The pump was changed when the belt was changed and the belt doesn't seem to flap or anything when running, it looks ok. I just don't want it to skip a tooth or anything when driving.

When I say turn it more than 90 degrees, I mean with a fair bit of force, if I just use moderate force it is about 90 degrees.

TBH it's probably fine then. Especially when you consider that the auto tensioner models have the belt flap about lol

I tried videoing it but can't get photobucket to upload it so abandoned that.

It doesn't seem to flap so assume it is fine, thanks for the advice.
